MONTREAL'S BILLY WAITE RUNS INTO A BOMBER TACKLER SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' it IT WILL HAPPEN! Every once in a while, i happens--a team that just plain isn't even rated--in fact, most fans figure they even haven't any business in the same competition--comes up and knocks off the favorites. Old Max Reesor and his Markham boys did it to an over-confident Oshawa OHA team back about 30 years ago, and to this day, our old friends such as "Doc" Rowden, "Barber" Johnston, etc., etc., have never quite figured it out. Well, it happened again last night Willis Motors Juveniles came from behind last night to nose out Gordon Dodd's Motor Sales Juveniles 6-5 and take their OASA Juvenile "A" playoff series in two- straight games. In three previous games this season, Dodd's defeated Willis by scores like 11-0, 16-1 and 32- . 6, or something like that. Wednesday night Willis won * the first one 5-2 and even the Willis fans figured it was + a great treat, but just a flash-in-the-pan. But last night, ! the lads from North Oshawa came up with the same + fighting spirit, barrels of pep and ginger, hustle and will- to-win and they came from behind to win the second game 6-5. Now the Dodd Motor Sales--Ontario semi- finalists last season--are in the discard can and the une heralded Willis Motors boys are in the OASA playoffs. They may not go far--we hope they go all the way-- but regardless, this is one of the best things that ever happened to softball in Oshawa, It should prove, just once more, that any team that wants to pull together and really try, can win, Willis Motors play in Peter- borough on Monday night first game of OASA play- downs. And a tip-of-the-hat to the Dodd Motor Sales players--they acted like true sportsmen and gentle- men, even in the face of a bitter disappointment. It was a tough pill to swallow--but they took it without squawking. And they'll be back next season. MINOR PLAYOFFS advanced a little last night --just a little. Fernhill Park Genosha Aces tied up their series with Bathe Park Midgets and they'll settle it this evening at Fernhill Park . . , SOUTHMEAD diamond got a lot more rain yesterday than the "up-town area" and they had to cancel their playoff game with Wood- view Midgets. They'll go tonight and if Southmead wins and evens the round--the third game is tomorrow. Kiwanis Bantam teams, Radio at Southmead and Fern- hill at College Hill, play their second games tonight and if either or both rounds are tied up tonight--they are also booked to play their third and deciding games tomorrow. This becomes necessary, as the 2-out-of-3 finals must be completed next week, rain-or-shine, as the winners must be ready by the next week-end, to meet competition in OASA playdowns . . . JEFF Mec- GRATH put Oshawa on the golfing map this week when he went to the semi-final round in the Canadian Ama- teur championships at Edmonton. He lost out yesterday to Gary Cowan, 2-and-1, and if Cowan should win the title, then Jeff will be in the same boat he was in the Ontario--Ilosing to the eventual champion, in the next- to-last round . . . BLUE BOMBERS defeated Montreal Alouettes last night 21-15 and so now the Big Four season is officially open . . , MICKEY MANTLE hit his 44th homer yesterday and Rager Maris got his 42nd . WARREN SPAHN beat Cubs yesterday, to register the 300th win of his major league pitching career . ., . YANKEES won yesterday over Washington and Detroit lost the the Twins, You can start buying your World Series tickets now -- and get a hotel reservation in Gotham, Blue Bombers Beat Larks MONTREAL (CP)--An injury made young Bud Grant perform a quick lineup shuffle Friday night and his Winnipeg Blue Bombers responded with a 21-15 win over Montreal Alouettes in the first West - East action of Canadian football's interlocking schedule. Bombers were down eight points early in the second quar- ter when Grant tossed Hal Led- out yard into the game at quarter back and Ledyard mounted a drive that provided a lead by halftime. 14-Year Old Girl Sets World Record PHILADELPHIA (AP) --Donna de Varona, 14, of Lafa- yette, "Calif., broke her own world record for the 400-metre ican Olympic team last year, was clocked in five minutes, 34.5 seconds. In the Alouette dressing room after the game, coach Perry Moss, normally optimistic was obviously downcast, "We're just not a football team yet," he said. "We need both poise and polish." Homebred fullback Gerry James and halfback Carver Shannon scored touchdowns for Bombers, both in the second quarter. RUNS 106 YARDS For Montreal, Don Clark skirted 106 yards around his right end for one touchdown--in the opening quarter--and quar- terback Nellie Barbrough drove over from the Winnipeg one for another in the final period. Shannon converted both Win- nipeg touchdowns, booted a 17- yard field goal and picked up a single on a field goal attempt that went awry. Three singles on punts by Charlie Shepard rounded out the Winnipeg offence. One was an|rofino 83-yarder and another carried 72 yards on a quick kick. They helped boost Shepard's average Se on 11 punts to a healthy 51.2 yards. Bill Bewlwy converted one of the Montreal touchdowns and picked up a single on a missed|™ field goal. Another point came on a single by Giovanni Berre- etta, 18, an Italian-born former pro soccer player. Winnipeg passed for 187 yards. Als, held to 149 yards passing, outrushed Winnipeg 202 yards to 160. But most of it was Clark's big run. 'Gary Cowan Nips Jeff McGrath, 2-1 EDMONTON (CP) -- Gary ..Cowan of Kitchener Ont, was v "trying to erase a reputation as 'a perennial bridesmaid today as he headed into the final 36-hole 'round of the Canadian amateur 'golr championship against tena- cious Ted Homenuik of Winni- g. Cowan, runner - up in the last two amateurs, eliminated Jeff McGrath of Oshawa 2 and 1 in a 36 - hole semi - final Friday. Homenuik played his usual long - driving game to beat Bob Wylie of Calgary 8 and 1 in their semi-final. "I guess it's getting to be al- most a routine getting into the amateur final," said Cowan, who lost 4 and 3 to Calgary's Keith Alexander in the 1960 event and one up to Johnny! Johnston of Vancouver in 1959. | "This may be the year I win." Cowan finished second in the Ontario amateur in 1059 and 1960 and was second in the On- tario open last year. He won the Canadian and Ontario junior ti- tles in 1956. Homenuik has a second-place finish to improve on today. As a skinny 23-year - old, he ad- vanced to the 1957 Canadian amateur final against veteran Nick Weslo and was belted 9 and "I've improved a lot since 1957," Homenuik said. "I'm playing better golf~much better ~and I'm older, with more ex- perience." He refused to crack under se- vere pressure. It was Wylie who blew up on the 35th hole to ince the match, The Cowan - McGrath event was not spectacular, but it had its brilliant moments. At one Charlie Bartlett Wins In UAW Golf Charliet Bartlett, with his card of 88-19-69, took the low net honors in the UAW Golf Club's weekly 18-hole competition, last Saturday. Runner-up was Ted Smith with 100-30-70 and Jack Jarvis was third with 82-11-71. The entry fee for the 36-hole "midsummer championship tournament", to be held on Saturdays, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26, is now due to be paid -- to any member of the executive. stage, McGrath birdied the third, fourth and fifth holes, but made no headway because Co- wan matched his efforts on the fourth and fifth and birdied the sixth. Cowan led one up after the first 18, extended it to three up after 27, lost the 28th and 20th with over-par scores, then took the 33rd when McGrath put his second shot into a trap and took a one-over-par five.
