Last vear Atlas developed two new finishes ONTARIO TODAY for stainless steel in architectural application, One embodies an embossed pattern of unusual beauty and great solidity and the other is a fine grain polished finish. HE late R. H. Davis, founder of the Atlas firm, who came to Welland from the United States in 1928 and became an ardent Canadian and one of our industrial titans, was the pioneer who in 1949 launched Atlas on its great, new adventure in stainless strip and sheet. His faith in what his company could accomplish was inspiring; and as has been proved, was not misplaced. Market studies had indicated to Atlas that stainless was a fast growing part of the steel industry. and that location in Canada would be SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1901 enhanced by the availability of Canadian nickel. Nickel is an eight per cent component of stainless steel. ; . A mill for producing hot rolled sheets began operations in September, 1950, and a cold rol- ling mill for sheets followed, with a concurrent increase in the variety of finishes available. Success with the installations for sheets assisted the company to decide in 1952 to proceed with the installation of a completely integrated modern mill for producing stainless steel strip in coil form. This integrated equipment in- cluded the first continuous casting machine for steel in the Western Hemisphere, which began operation in November, 1954. A second cold strip mill and new annealing and pick- ling were added in 1956. In this period it became evident that essential mater- ials would be freely available at competitive prices. A major consideration was the Thompson, Manitoba, Inco development, promising amp- le supplies of nickel. These assurances prompted Atlas to engage in a concentrated market development pro- gram. As a result, the com- pany has been able to main- tain busy production sche- dules when other producers felt the effects of depressed conditions. : lines TN keeping Atlas competi- tive and abreast of mod- ern developments, the com- pany has benefited from the keen and incisive leadership of H. George De Young. Like Mr. Davis, the founder, Mr. De Young came from the United States and soon was an ardent Canadian. From works manager in 1951, he advanced steadily and be- came president in April, 1956. His able direction of the stainless program has gone hand-in-hand with vigorous promotion of the world- famous Atlas lines of special- ty and tool steels, products which are marketed in 40 countries and which maintain the Welland company as the largest specialty steel opera- tion in the Commonwealth. Mr. De Young's frequent appeals for action to protect and improve the health of Canadian industry have earn- ed national attention. The federal government has called upon his talents for impor- tant roles, notably as a mem- ber of the 1960 Canadian Trade Mission to the Eur- opean Common Market,
