Mrs. Norman Wood, RR 2, WHITBY SPORTS PARADE By GERRY BLAIR We just recently returned from a pleasant trip through a few of the Eastern United States, ending up in Atlantic City, New Jersey as our final destination. We touched briefly upon five states, New York, Penn- sylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. The highlight of our journey, excluding of course "the city by the ocean" was a visit to the elderly and elegant United States Naval Academy, situated on the Severn river at Annapolis, Maryland. Some time ago we mentioned in this corner about the challenge of Army and Navy by the Ontario Lacrosse Association's Senior league for an outdoor game at Varsity Stadium this month. While viewing the ground at the Academy, we came arcoss the practice field which houses three games at one time on their spacious flat right on the river bank, which is part of the school grounds. In the U.S. they play an 11-man game, that requires much larger nets. We were unable to contact the recreation al director of Navy, or we would have enquired about the possibility of the proposed game. As it stands now, there has been no official reply to the letter sent by the OLA. About one mile from the Academy stands the famous Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium where many a traditional Army-Navy football battle has been staged. We estimated the seating capacity at ap- proximately 60,000. On our way home we detoured into Philadelphia for a day, and took in the Los Angeles Oodgers-Phillies night game at Connie Mack Stadium. The fans were barely seated when Gil Hodges lined one into the upper tier with two mates aboard. The Dodgers went on to win 7-2 against the colorless Phils. The South Ontario County Softball league con- cluded their special play-off last week to determine final standings. They are as follows: Markham, Mount Zion, Whitby, Port Perry Intermediates, Brooklin, Pickering and Port Perry Juniors. Whitby Abners qualified for third position by downing Port Ints. last Wednesday night, and bowing to Mount Zion on Friday night in Brooklin. Abner's Essos now meet Pickering Merchants in a best-of-three quarter- final,( opening tomorrow night here in Whitby at the Town Park); game time is called for 8:15 p.m. In other play-off rounds, Markham take on Port Perry in a best of five set, while Mount Zion and Brooklin hook up in a cozy best-of-three series, with all games in Brooklin. Whitby Abner's blew a 5-4 lead last night in the eighth inning to Heffering"s Imperials of the Oshawa City and District league In an ex- hibition tilt at Alexandra Park. Heffering's exploded for nine runs in their half of the eight to win 13-5. Wally Samanski started for Abner's but retired in the sixth inning after aggravaiing a back injury suf- fered 10 days ago against Mount Zion, Heffering's managed only two hits off Samanski, good for three runs--two of them unearned. Some power-hitting by Jack Logeman, Henry Sarnovsky and Reg Hickey in the eighth accounted for the nine runs. 12 batters went to the plate in that frame. Logeman with a home run and a triple in two official trips to the plaet was the big gun for Heffering's He "also walked twice, Abner's plated four runs on a walk and three succes sive singles, two of them bunts in the fifth to over= come a 2-1 deficit. Ted James held them hitless after that outburst. Bill Giddings who took over for Samanski was the victim of the onslaught in inning number eight. TOWN AND COUNTRY ... Thousands have been relieved with this inexpensive substance right in the privacy of their own home without any discomfort or inconvenience, In one hemorrhoid case after another, "very striking improve- ment" was reported and verified by doctors' observations, Pair was promptly relieved. And 'while gently relieving pain, actual reduction or retraction (shrinking) took place. And most amazing of all--this improvement was maintained in cases where doctors' observations were continued over a period of many months! In fact, results were so thorough such statements as 'Piles have ceased to be a problem!" And among these sufferers were a very wide variety of hemorrhoid cone ditions, some of even 10 to 20 years' standing. All this, without the use of nare cotics, anesthetics or astringents of any kind.
