som AR TE Science Solving Fireny mystery WASHINGTON -- Mystery of how a lightning bug keeps the home fire burning with such cold efficiency may be near a solution. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have succeeded in producing synthetic luciferin, the strange substance that re- acts with oxygen and enzymes to give the fireflv ite ~hilly, eerie glow. Before the synthetic process was developed, luciferin and the enzymes were painstakingly ex- tracted from swarms of insects. The children of Baltimore as- gisted by collecting egiht mil- lion in the past 12 years. MORE EFFICIENT The discovery is a major breakthrough in two fields of re- search. Or the practical side, it means man is closer to pro- ducing cold, highly efficient chemical light, which is of in- terest to science and industry tric lightbulb, which converts only 3 per cent of its energy into light, the firefly seems highly competent. It converts 95 per cent of its energy into light, wasting a negligible amount in heat. Abundant supplies of luciferin may prove helpful to science in its search for the key to life it- self. To sustain life, all crea- tures depend directly or in- directly on photosynthesis -- the mysterious process by which plants utilize light to store up chemical energy in the mole- cules of food compounds. Yet the firefly does the opposite. It uses its chemical energy to pro- duce light. Dr. William D. McElroy, lead- er of the Johns Hopkins project, hopes within a year to know the exact mechanism by which fire- flies luciferin. As an experiment he is "labelling" the different parts of their luminous organs with radioactive sulfur to trace chemical reactions. AL the moment, no commer- clal uses seem to exist for Luciferin, but its synthetic man- ufacture has brought to light the possibility of derivatives. It is a complex substance: a single molecule consists of 26 atoms of five different elements. SIGNALS OF LOVE Fireflies have their own spe- cial use for pyrotechnics -- ro- mance. In many species the flying male and wingless female both have flashes. A male out for an evening of sparking will start announcing his presence. If his amorous intentions are well re- back. West of the Rockies, the male does not wink, but this does not dim his response to a young fe- male shining coyly in the grass. of the Photuris pennsylvanica species lure males of other spe- cies to their doom. The deadly demoiselles make meals of any indiscreet insects that show up for a twilight rendezvous and are not suitable as mates. However, most adult fireflies eat nothing at all. Their energy has been stored from the larval stage, and their lifetime is so short they require no additional food ceived, the female will flash Like the sirens of old, females| & THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, July 8, 1961 3 TCA Attendants By KEN SMITH Canadian Press Stiff Writer of strong support for Trans- Canada Air Lines flight attend- with the Crown-owned company Developments Friday indi- for Friday, July 21, might in- not operate. several fronts. other TCA unions affiliated with they are forced to strike. should give whole-hearted sup- Pledged Backing chinists (CLC), which services planes, said there the TCA MONTREAL (CP, rts|is "considerable sy m p a thy" 0 47) i BED among the IAM members for the attendants. ants in their contract dispute/nmay HEED PICKETS He added that while the union added strength today to the bound possibility that a scheduled ran iid be bound bY the termé of strike could ground TCA planes. |«j would not contravene the in- vidual's right" to observe a cated that the walkout of the|picket line set the attend- 800 flight attendants scheduled | Up by the nts.
