Serves Community Needs By PHILIP SIMPSON AJAX (Staff) -- Just as the efficiency of a modern day busi- ness depends upon the standard of nursing care in a hospital and the management of that care has a great deal to do with caring for the sick in the most efficient manner. In the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital the area of control for the entire nursing function of the hospital is the nursing office. Nursing makes the difference between a hotel and a hospital and in order to maintain a high standard of nursing care, the nursing office has to work closely with all hospital. The prime interest of the Nursing Office is 'patient care, but this is only a small portion of the office's duties. In addition the nursing office is occupied with staffing and management of that staff, and purchasing equipment such as medical sup- plies, narcotics and pharmaceut- icals. Equally important to the care i.e. heat, light, business and ac- environment, tal has grown over the past Clintock, RMT, ATCM, assisted by the pupils of Miss Donna Samells, ARCT, RMT. The pro- ceeds of the evening, which amounted to $23, was donated to the Port Perry Hospital to- Those taking part in the reci- tal were: Roy Gerrow, Jimmy Gerrow, Beth Robertson, Bever- ley Aldred, Brenda Geer, Cathy Jeffrey, Marilyn Hoggard, Bev- erley Eden, Patsy Aldred, Ron. In actual fact the nursing of- fice is the nerve centre of the hospital and is occupied by Maunsell Gerrow, director of nursing and Mrs. Janet Smith, assistant director of nursing. It is their obligation, as mem- bers of the medical profession to see that the Ajax and Pick- ering General Hospital is oper- ating efficiently for 24 hours a day and for 365 days a year, Therefore the directors of nurs- ing are on 24-hour call and have to return to the hospital for large accidents, staff shortages, patient problems or anything that might need their attention. The nursing administrators have to see that the policies of the hospital board, medical staff and administrator are carried out throughout the hospital. Today with the hospital's bed occupancy figure pushing 100 per cent the nerve centre is a constant hive of activity throughout the day. PATIENT CARE The nursing office is concern- ed with patient care and the philosophy of the 45 members of the nursing staff is '"'better nursing care". In this field of medical serv- ice the high standard of patient care is maintained by increas- ing the ratio of professional to auxiliary staff, by furthering the education of the staff through "inservice education", thereby providing more job satisfaction in the auxiliary staff and finally by editing an Administrative Manual and a Procedural Manu- al as guides for the nursing staff. The manuals are the hos- pital's Bibles. The hospital assists the physi- cal welfare of the community by aiding in voluntary clinics. Incorporated into the care of the patient is an interest in, not only his physical status, but also his emotional, family and spiri- tual environment TIME STUDY Over the past few years the office has concerned itself with seeing that the professional nursing staff have more time for actual nursing. By making intense time and activity studies the department has 'farmed out" many of the extra duties that nurses once performed, to Driver Draws $200 Fine PICKERING (Staff) -- An Ajax man who stole his em. ployer's car so that he could get something to eat, was on - Monday charged with joyriding and driving while disqualified before Magitrate Robert Dnie- per in Pickering Police Court. Robert Marchand, 60 Cedar Street, Ajax, pleaded guilty as charged and was placed on sus- ded sentence for one year the hospital's h keeping and dietary staff. STAFFING All regular nursing staff is procured through the nursing office and therefore the direc- tors of nursing have to deal with such items as salaries, time sheets, sick time and vaca- tion time. In this area of duty] the staff performs paperwork that in other businesses would be handled by additional depart- ments. PURCHASING The majority of hospital sup- plies are purchased through the nursing office. This means that the directors have to interview sales representatives and be conversant on the new types of hospital equipment, medical data and new drugs that are on the market. There again, in other businesses this duty is| handled by a purchasing agent. Therefore in a normal day the nursing directors' duties en- compass the functions of an| executive nurse, a personnel manager, a purchasing agent, |an instructor, a time study en- gineer, a public relations man, a liaison officer and a trouble shooter. Just one of the troublesome problems facing the administra- tors is the allocation of beds in this crowded hospital. This re- quires a great deal of planning in order to accommodate the community's needs both from the medical and surgical stand- point.
