8 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, June 17, 1961 HOME OF THE WEEK HOME DESIGN NO. 224 You just can't pass this home up. Study it and you will see the true advantages of professional designing. An ex- terior that can't be beat is right here with its low, rambl- ing lines and effective win- dow spacing. The porch, trel- lis and planting box all add an artistic touch. Featured in the interior is the kitchen area with 18 feet of unruffled free- dom for the housewife, and a convenient full basement. The spacious living room is rec- tangular shaped and eager for the small touches that make homes sparkle with in- dividual beauty. Adjoining the living room is the dining area. Blueprints also available for frame construction. Standard Builders' blueprints costing $9.75 a set are obtain- able in Canada for this design No. 224. Now available from ad- dress below a new and enlarged Book of House Designs entitled "A New Selection of Low Cost Homes for Canadians", priced $1.00. Contains 114 de- signs including 1 storey, 14 storey and split level homes, plus much useful information on building terms and require- ments. Order your copy to- day. Also included in this Design is full information on how to order the blueprints. The number of tourists enter- ing Japan increased by 39 per cent in the last three years to a record 212,000 in 1960. WHITMAN LOG CABIN BUILDING QUESTION: I plan to build a rustic log cabin type home. What are sources for suggested. log cabin building plans? Also sources for purchase of log material? ANSWER: "Building With Logs," is available for 25 cents (no stamps) from the Superin- tendent of Documents, Washing- ton 25, D.C., this contains de- tailed building instructions, and a choice of building plans and layout, as well as items of fur- niture. Western Pine Associa- tion, Yeon Building, Portland 4, Ore., also has plans for vacation and cabin type buildings avail- able. Many large lumber deal- ers may have this type of infor- mation available, as well as supplying the log material. "How to Build Your Home in the Woods," by B. Angler, pub- lished by Sheridan House, Inc., contains complete informaiton on building log cabins; your local book store can get it for you. Books on the subject can also be obtained at your local library. WINDOW INFORMATION QUESTION: Where can I get window information? Folders on rthe different types, or a book containing information and pic- tures of the different kinds and makes. ANSWER: The following leaf- lets, available for 15 cents each from the Small Homes Council, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL, contains illustrations as well as text details and discussions of the suitability for various con- ditions of window types: No. F 11.0 "Window Planning Princi- ples"; No. F 11.1 "Selecting ing Windows and Screens." Consult the classified telephone directory for dealers and distri- butors of different types of win- dows ("Windows--Metal" and "Millwork for wood windows). FLAKING MORTAR QUESTION: The foundation of my home is made of large stone and rock held together by |mortar. Several years ago i painted these basement walls with an aluminum paint. The mortar is now flaking and be- coming a fine powder under the paint. I want to repaint these |walls. Is there a treatment I can use over the walls in their present state to preserve them? I am sure this problem did not arise due to a moisture condi- tion. ANSWER: If you are positive there is no moisture factor con- tributing to the crumbling mor- tar. I can only conclude the mortar itself (too skimpy a proportion of cement in the mixture). In time, this will act as you have experienced. You might experiment with trans- parent, liquid cement harden- ing preaparations before going to the heavy expense of remor- taring. First, though, you will have to scrape off any paint so| that the hardener can work on the mortar itself. Try this out on a small test area first. DETERIORATED WOOD | QUESTION: Our summer cot- tage is two years old and has a grade level cement slab about six inches thick. On top of this slab there is a three-quarter- inch plywood floor. We put down linoleum on the plywood, wall to wall. Now, after two winters, Windows"; No. F 11.2 "Insulat- the linoleum on the plywood has DINING 9-7% 8-0 PORCH a AR AVAILABLE. There is an air space of about one and or. fourth inch between plywood and cement slab, the plywood being held down by nailing to the furring strips embedded in the con- crete. The condensation has de-! teriorated the plywood floor. What recommendations do you have on the restoration of the floor? What type of floor cover- ing to apply to prevent this dam- age again? : ANSWER: A wood floor on! concrete in contact with the ground will deteriorate unless protected by waterproofing (as you discovered). This can be done by coating the concrete with liquid asphalt waterproof- ing, then putting down a layer of overlapping (for half their width) sheets of heavy asphalt- saturated felt, and mopping as- phalt waterproofing between the laps. Then the furring strips (or 'sleepers') can be placed on the felt or in an asphalt mastic Registration at Camp Samac for those wishing to take Swimming Instruc- tions will take place at the Administration Building, Camp Samac, on the following dates: A-G.
