Guarding the Tongue Shortly after the death of Christ, Peter and John went to the temple in Jerusalem at prayer hour. By the gates they healed a lame beggar, and when the people gathered around them in amazement Peter and John preached the holiness of Christ, verting many. -- Acts 3:1-4:4. \ I PY | ee -- 2 = er |] "As they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadduccees . . . being grieved that they taught people laid hands on them and put them in hold unto the next day," when they were tried by the high priest and rulers of Israel. -- Acts 4:17. con- ILLUSTRATED SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Scripture--Proverbs 6:12.19; 15:17; Acts 4; James 1:19-20; 26; 3; 4:11:12. Amazed by the miracle of healing and by the bold and eloquent speech of Peter and John, "unlearned men," the jealous rulers tried to forbid further preaching. When the apostles replied "We cannot but speak which we have seen and heard," they had to let them go. -- Acts 4:8.21. Back among their followers, the apos- tles distributed to the needy money brought by wealthier followers who had sold their possessions out of the "great grace" which "was upon them all." For some people it is a favorite pastime, But we should remem- ber what Jesus said, "Judge not, that ye be net judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." Matthew 7:1,2. We must all ap- pear before the judgment seat of Christ: Then we shall be weighed in our own scales. If we have been harsh, censor: ious and bitter in our judging of others, it will all be taken into account by Jesus Christ in His judgment of us. He will judge righteously. If we expect mercy, we must exercise it now. Let us not be in the ridiculous situation -|of trying to remove a splinter from the eye of our brother when there is a whole beam in our own eye. Our limited knowledge our condemning of another very Others |dangerous. We know only part; of the story. Hearsay evidence is unacceptable in court. Yet, how many reputations have suffered at the tongue of idle gossipers; busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. How can we avoid this sinful judging? First, let us ask God to forgive us our sins for the sake of Jesus Christ. Let us ask Him to purify our hearts by the in welling of the Holy Spirit. As the Spirit rules our life, the love of Jesus Christ will be manifest in us, We shall want to help Jecile, not hurt them. We shall feel kindly toward them, even if they are unkind to us. We shall want to think the best of them. Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love . . . beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
