Works Committee Chairman Harry Smith in reporting to council on the results of tend- ers let for a new truck for the Ajax Works Department, said that his committee had accept- ed a tender from Ainsworth Motors of Ajax. Councillor Smith said that the half-ton pick-up truck would cost $1,900 and would be a valuable asset to the works department. HOLIDAY DECLARED A resolution was passed which officially declared Monday, Au- gust 7, as a civic holiday for Ajax. NEW FURNITURE Property Chairman Danny Noland asked council to approve the purchase of furniture for the office of Mayor William Parish. Among furniture ap- proved for purchase for a total cost of $593 was a desk, swivel chair, four armchairs, a hat rack, coat rack and a garbage can. Deputy Reeve Pat Shee- han asked His Worship if he would have to wait until next year before getting a carpet for his office. "The bylaw will stipulate that fireworks can only be sold on the shopping day before Victoria Day and Dominion Day and that they can only be set off on one's own property," said Mr. Robert- son. "Permission will have 'to be sought from the Fire Chief be- fore organizations can hold fire- work displays on public prop- erty," he added. Prepared BROUGHAM -- A report from Monteith, Monteith and Riehl, Pickering Township Auditors, declared that much progress had been made in mechanizing the accounting system, which went into operation in Decem- ber, 1960, in the Pickering Township Municipal offices. An increase is shown of some 30 to 40 per cent of taxable properties in the Township. The tax bills were completed | on May 16, two weeks earlier than heretofore, when they were handwritten, and extra staff was engaged. This year the tax roll was completed in 11 days, with no extra staff. In 1960 the bills were mailed on June 3; this year, they will be forwarded on| May 26. Douglas J. Plitz, treasurer, reported at a special Council] meeting on Friday night, that the auditors were well satisfied with the progress that has been made due to mechanization. He said that the special tribute should be paid to the staff in his department, who handled the new machinery exceptionally well, having had no previous ex- perience with such. "They deserve to be congratu- lated on a job well done," he said. PERMIT CABINS A resolution of Council per- mits 10 cabins to be built at the ADY Camp located on 37 acres land smallest carp. Before such cabins may be built, the organization, which sponsors an open air camp for health purposes, must sign an agr t that the cabins will be about 560 square feet each, and that they be not lived in from Sept. 14 to June 15 of any year. The agreement will stipulate that the cottages will be erected on posts so that they may be removed should the Conserva- tion Authorities declare the lands on which they sit are flood lands. CLOSING DEFINITE that he had approached Messrs. Campbell and Bedell of the De- partment of Highways about the temporary closing of Church street during renovation of Highway 2. Complaints had been registered to Council about the hardship this closing was caus- ing, but the Reeve declared that they refused to open Station road at Highway 401 because they thought it dangerous. He said that Church street may be closed until the end of the year. Pickering Village has agreed to accept all fire calls south of Highway 401 west of Ajax. The Department of Highways contemplates widening Highway 2 to 120 feet. There will be room for a sidewalk on either side of the road, and lights will be in- stalled when in the opinion of the Department, it becomes necessary. DEER SEASON Pickering Township Council went on record as opposing an open deer season in 1961, as had been suggested by the Depart. ment of Lands and Forests. There was no hesitation in unanimously passing this reso- lution, a recommendation of the Pickering Township Game Com- mittee. "3 Coming To Oshawa | FRI SAT.
