Above, Dr. Dymond, left, cuts the ribbon officially | Whitby Red Wings open their 1961 OLA Junior "A" lacrosse season at home next Thursday, May 18 against the Long Branch Monarchs. Whitby, defend- ing Eastern Canada Junior Champions and Minto Cup finalists, lost several of their standout per- formers from last year's championship squad. They will find it difficult to fill the huge gap left in their roster with the departure of players like, Terry Davis, Glen Lotton, Bob Carnegie, Brian Gibson, Charlie Grandy etc. The Red Wings have several good Juven- ile players from neighboring communities, and from distant points like Huntsville, bidding for spots. The experts rate the clubs to finish as follows: Brampton, St. Catharines, Fergus, and either Whitby or Hastings (formerly Peterboro) battling it out for fourth and last play-off positon--followed by Long Branch and Mimico. Brooklin Hillcrests are still talking contract with the six players from the Peterboro Seniors, now de- funct. All clubs in the OLA Senior group are play- ing on the split, or share-the-wealth basis, at the end of the season. It's the only sensible way to operate in order to keep lacrosse at its peak. Baker, Farley, Batley, Curtis, Ferguson and O'Reilly are collectively bargaining for a set amount per game. They have indi- cated that they will probably come to Whitby for tonight's practice to look the situation over and pos- sibly discuss their financial woes further with manager Alvin Puckrin. Without them, Brooklin would have their hands full in their first year of Senior com- petition. Port Credit Sailors, the defending Canadian Senior lacrosse champions, appear as strong contend= ers once more with a multitude of good lacrosse play- ers competing for positions on the Sailors' roster. TOWN AND COUNTRY . .. . We would like to correct an error made here last week--the Osh- awa Firemen captured the Toronto Township Hockey league championship for the first time in five years, and not fourth time as we mentioned before. Despite the poor weather that prevailed, a goodly number were on hand. The club practice again tonight and Friday at Alexandra Park in prep- aration for their league opener May 23.
