FONTHILL ONTARIO asd SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1961 pounds are commonplace; 25 is maybe worth a bit of boasting; when you get into the 35 pound class, and that's not too unusual, you really have something to" talk about. True, the speckled trout is the most beautiful of all fishes. It's also, in our opinion, one of the most over-rated from the viewpoint of the average angler. The salvelinus perfectionist who crawls on hands and knees along the banks of a stream in search of a "prize" which may weigh all of six ounces can have it. 'We'll take the good old lake trout, who doesn't care about the weather; isn't fussy about the offering made; who hits as though he meant it and who fights just as hard on the surface of the water as any speckled trout ever spawned. EW advancements in boat trailer design have made the 22 foot cruiser just as effortless to handle as the small 14 foot runabout. Now, due to new heavy-duty winches, it's possible to load a big 3,200 1b. cruiser onto its travelling berth with only 30 lbs. pressure on the winch handle. With the aid of the hand brake on the winch you can also control the speed with which the cruiser is launched. One of the fastest selling cruiser trailers has a 3-speed winch which permits ratios as high as 120 to 1 or low as 36 to 1. For total ease, some boat trailers have a power winch, powered by the car's electrical system, that will handle anything up to 4,000 lbs. Other popular features on today's most modern cruiser boat trailers include a tongue jack, tilt jack and a new automatic launching and loading system. BOATMAN who has only tied up to docks all of his boating life may question the need for anchors; yet, like parachutes, if you need one you really need one. Experienced boatmen, even on small boats, carry two anchors: One a medium weight one for temporary anchorages; and a heavy one for riding out big blows or for an extended stay. The second anchor is also good in case the first is fouled beyond recovery, or for extra help in hand-hauling a boat when aground. While there are complicated formulas on deter- mining the exact length of line (or cable) to use in anchoring, a reasonable rule of thumb is seven times the length from the deck to the bottom of the body of water. If the depth of water (plus the height of the boat from water line up) is 10 feet, the anchor line should be 70 feet. When anchoring, be sure to check 360 degree "swing" so the boat won't come too close to other an- chored boats, regardless of wind direction. Also there is a certain amount of drag to expect, even if "fore and aft" anchors are used. When ready to put the anchor into the water, ease it in carefully: don't give it a toss. If a turn of the line happens tc catch around your legs, you could be in for a nasty fall. Also -- although it sounds ridiculous -- "be sure the other end of the line is fastened to the boat. Many an otherwise sharp boatman has carefully lowered his anchor into the water and then watched, horrified, the unfastencd end of the line go sliding into the water. ;
