SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1961 wall-eyes, and maskinonge will be available. Main headache of the early speckled trout season is the weather. Running back through diaries of the past 30 years, this reporter has found that ONTARIO TODAY scrambling over rocks on stream banks in lake trout fishing; the fish are in lakes. You can sit in a boat in reasonable comfort (warmly dressed, of course) and fish for them. What a lot of people don't know, and what some better versed anglers do know, is that for a week or so after the ice first goes out in the spring, the lake trout are to be found on the surface. Later, as the water warms, you have to go after them with copper or monel lines, dragging anywhere from 100 to 300 feet of wire behind a slowly moving boat. This isn't particularly exciting fishing. But ah, those few days after the ice goes out! The lake trout, lean after a winter's relative fasting, are viciously hungry. You can take them on a fly rod -- if you have lots of time and some good streamer flies. They can be "had" on a bait rod with plugs, spoons, live bait such as minnows. Spinning equipment is pretty deadly and, in fact, there doesn't seem to be ranything much the lake trout refuses at this time of year. And you don't have to travel so far, on the average, to get lake PAGE SEVENTEEN trout. There's excellent lake trout fishing, for instance, in Lake Sim- coe, 40 miles from Toronto or in the Kawartha, Haliburton, Algon- quin Park, Ottawa Valley, Kirkland Lake and Timmins areas. A few miles out of Sudbury or Port Arthur and youre in good fishing. That isn't the case, of course, in more southerly Ontario areas such as Sarnia, Chatham, Welland, Wood- stock, Galt or Guelph -- but a 'drive of less than 150 miles from any of these centres will put you: into deep enough waters. HERE'S one thing about lake trout fishing. If you get one, you've got a meal. You'll seldom take one under two pounds (and ~ a two pound speckled trout would: send most fishermen or women into hysterics.) The laker doesn't hit a bait until he's a fairly well grown individual. Fish of 10 to 15 the "opening" day has, in 25 cases, been marred by either snow, rain, high or low water or a mixture of all four. The snow and rain haven't affect- ed the fish, but have made the fishing tough. The high water means the fish have already fed heartily on the insects and worms washed into the streams. Low water has meant they've departed from our favorite spots for deeper surroundings. Although the ice goes out on many northern lakes in the week of April 25, the best speckled trout lakes, it seems, are still covered by May 1. That early, too, many of the lumber or other trails are still too muddy to be driven over. So, probably the best bet for the southern Ontario speckled trout fisherman is as close to home as he can find clear water which has speckled trout in it. O, we'll take lake trout fishing for our opening day's sport. The lake trout runs up to 50 pounds in weight (larger ones have been caught by commercial fishermen.)
