A film queen with a mediocre talent could perform for years without criticism. Heroes were accepted as actors although they couldn't talk unless they were sitting on a horse. Ergo, Ed Sullivan should have gone into movies. From the time he first stepped in front of television cameras more than .a decade ago, Sullivan has been the butt of every bad gag ever written. Comedians have impersonated his mannerisms and halting speech to the point of insult. He's known as television's most untalented talent. Every time Sullivan comes up to bat he has two strikes on him but he's hit enough homers in these two-and-no pitches situations to remain TV's top showman. How does he do it? ULLIVAN has two really big things going for him. Although his program at times is no better than an old-time vaudeville revue, he has never let two weeks running go by without presenting a famous name. Secondly he's home-spun, awkward, unable sometiines to speak two words with any clarity. This "ordinary guy" approach has in- furiated some, made warm friends of others. And it's not really an approach at all. It's plain Ed Sullivan, a sports reporter and newspaper columnist, the first TV square peg to fit into a round hole. Sullivan, who comes to .nany Ontario Wayne and Shuster in action, television sets through the facilities of the CBC, has always seemed to have a warm spot in his heart for Canada and Cana- dians. It may have all started when the Canadian National for something like a hundred thousand dollars. Once again Sullivan stuck his hands in his pockets and, weaving from side to side, he announced the acts and was a great success. By that time of course television exposure had made him accept- able to an audience even if the cat had his tongue. ATEVER the reason, Sullivan ended up by bringing American audiences the Canadian comedy team of Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster (it took him months to master the name 'Shuster' and up until then always called Frank, 'Shister). This was a tremendous break- through for the Canadians but, in my opinion, a bigger break for the Americans. Wayne and Shuster were the freshest things to hit television in years and Sullivan had them locked up tight in a contract. Since then they've spread their wings and take over the summer replace- ment show for Jack Benny this year. The latest Canadian given a chance by Sullivan is Toronto's Joan Fairfax who once served fish and chips in the Ontario capital, worked her way into showbusiness, had her own TV show on CBC and then took off on her own. Joan's appearance with old granite-face and subsequent ap- pearance on the rival network's Jack Paar program, set off one of the most bitter CONTINUED ON PAGE 15 Exhibition brought him in to headline the grandstand show - =
