14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, April 26, 1961 Lone Lady Mayor Battles Council ALBERNI, B.C. (CP) -- By any rules of combat, a news- paper story said, Mayor Mabel Anderson should sue for peace. A petition signed by more voters than put her into office has called for her resignation on grounds of incompetence. Aldermanic candidates she supported in the last civic elec- tion were beaten to the last man. She's had only squatter's rights to the gavel since coun- cil decided to bypass her by voting her out of the chair. And aldermen put her out of business for three weeks when they voted to suspend council business pending clarification of her threat to call a public in- quiry into city affairs. It all began in December, 1959, when this Vancouver Is- land city of 10,000 put Mrs. Ma- bel Anderson into the mayor's chair. The running battle of the sexes has continued weekly since then, yet Mabel---nobody seems to call her Mrs. Ander- son--appears as fresh as a py- thon after a winter sleep. ALDERMEN SHOW STRAIN The same cannot be said for the six aldermen -- a former member of Parliament, a con- tract logger, a car salesman, a millworker, a barber and a boom man. They may sense that the Mon- day night skirmishes in Al berni's funereal city hall--it's painted white, edged in black-- go deeper than the parochial issues at hand, mail delivery, a relocated bridge, sewers, a dog pound. keeper, must be about 55 now. Her husband, Bill, a quiet, pas- sive man, .atfends every meet- ing of council. The Andersons live in a pleas- ant, rambling frame house be- hind their store. Mabel is a cur- ler--skip, of course. As Joan of Arc riding to save Alberni, Mabel Anderson chose age. She was against sewers, in favor of septic tanks. So was a fractional majority of the vot- ers. Out went Mayor Jack Luck- hurst, a motel operator and har- bor commissioner. In went Ma* 1 the unlikely mount of civic sew-|2 "I still can't understand it," 'says Mr. Luckhurst. VICTIMS PLOT STRATEGY Aldermen and city staff took to going to Jack Luckhurst's| place after council meetings for| a medicinal shot and a cry on' the former mayor's shoulder.
