Stanley Cup CHICAGO (AP) -- "I don't| know whether we'll win again] next year, but we'll be building] to try." The comment came Monday night from owner Jim Norris after his Chicago Black Hawks held a champagne-flowing party to celebrate their Stanley Cup victory over the Detroit Red Wings. The Hawks whipped the Red| Wings 5-1 Sunday to win the best-of-seven final series 4-2 and | capture their first cup in 23| years. Norris, who quit big-time box- ing under United States con- gressional pre s sure, savored the fruits of his hockey victory in serious fashion. He snorted at a statement by Jack Adams, general manager of the Wings, that the Hawk showing Fesulted from a dona-| tion of capable players from every other team in the Na- tional League. In 1954, Norris pushed through a player draft to break the monopoly of better players held by more powerful league teams. He said it was "a malicious mean charge" that the Hawks won hockey's top honors as a result of this move. "We spent $1,000,000 since 1957 to build the club that won the championship. If you look through the trades and switches we made, you'll see that we traded away plenty of talent. "And study our roster. We roduced our own stars such as Eimer Vasko, Pierre Pilote, Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull. "Next year we hope to have \ three or four up from our farm {system who will make the grade. THEY GOT $500,000 "I agree Montreal helped us with players, but they got $500,- 000 for them. "Although I conducted a lot of world champion fights--and 1 don't feel bitter about the out- come of my boxing efforts -- I think this Stanley Cup triumph may have given me my biggest sports thrill. "I am not naive enough to think that a world championship this year means another one next year. We need to bring up rookies to hold the pace. "J still don't know of anybody in sports who has been able to buy a champion. You have to work at it and earn it. And we did it this year."
