The head quar ters will be moved from the RCAF base at St. Hubert, Que., to an under- ground combat centre at Grout Lake near North Bay, Ont. The move will be made when the centre which will house the SAGE Semi Automatic Ground Environment -- elec- tronic system which will control the operations of both manned and unmanned interceptors is completed. The NORAD region which this headquarters controls includes the Atlantic Provinces, Labra- dor, Quebec, Eastern Ontario and Maine. at Comox, B.C.; several United States Air Force interceptor squadrons in Maine, Newfound- land and Labrador; and at least two Bomarc squadrons of 30 missiles each at North Bay and La Macaza, Que. Into the centre will be fed in- formation about waging an air battle. From it Bomarc anti-air- craft missiles can be launched from bases, hundreds of miles away. A yeal ago there was a move in the United - States to save money by building these SAGE combat centres above ground. However, former defence minister Pearkes insisted that the SAGE unit in Canada be laced underground for better rotection. MOST UNDERGROUND Thus the Trout Lake head-| quarters will have control over | .4 |all RCAF Interceptor squadrons| : with the exception of the one! It is believed that nearly all SAGE centres will be under- ground. The Trout Lake SAGE is the only one in Canada. Daletice Nerve Centre (Will Go Underground Informants said that when the northern NORAD region headquarters moves to North Bay, RCAF Air Defence Com- mand Headquarters will remain at St. Hubert. How many Canadian intercep- tor squadrons the Trout Lake combat centre will command remains in doubt. Four CF-100 squadrons will be disbanded by Sept. 30, leaving two at Bagot- ville, Que., and one each at Ot- tawa, North Bay and Comox. The RCAF hopes these five remaining squadrons will be equipped with the American su- personic F-101B interceptor be- fore they also have to be dis- banded. Originally NORAD was to have 11 regions, five of them international. It is understood that in the last year this num- ber has been reduced to nine but the boundaries of these are secret. | American people have become vastly enlightened about food.
