SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1961 'In these areas, splendid facilities are pro- vided not only for skiers but for those with other interests, such as curling, skating, sledding or just plain enjoyment of the Typical of the clubs reflecting the boom- ing ski interest in southern Ontario is the one at Oshawa. The Oshawa club operates near Kirby, 21 miles northeast of the city -- and within easy driving distance of Toronto. It has 200 acres of excellerft skiing terrain, with the main hill dropping 325 feet in 550 yards and providing a var- iety of slopes and runs. There are four tows, a jump, a fine clubhouse, wax and ski shop and parking facilities, Member- ship has grown from 150 in 1956 to 875 in 1960, For professional instruction, the club has the services of Hans Eder, former member of the Austrian Olympic ski team, and there are extensive programs for junior development. For those who do not ski, there are other snow sports. Ice-fishing has become in. creasingly popular on the many thousands of lakes of the province. Most populated with ice fishermen each weekend is Lake 'Simcoe, some 45 miles north of Toronto, 'The southern part of Lake Simcoe freezes over to thickness of about two feet, strong enough to support a village of huts and take traffic from cars, jeeps and snowmobiles. The hiits are usually heated with a small oil stove. A hole While ice-fishing for many years was a man's sport, in the past few years women and children have joined their husbands and fathers in catching fish from the cold waters. So popular has ice-fishing become that gn Lake Simcoe and several other lakes it is not necessary to bring a portable hut along; you can rent huts by the. day or for the week-end, located on the ice and supplied with bait and rods, Ardent fishermen fly north to lakes where lodges and fishing camps are open during the winter season or guides supply heated tents, Skating carnivals and races are on the program at many spots in Ontario this winter, At Brampton, for example, there will be a figure skating carnival February 24 and 28, The first week in March there will be an ice show at Rainy River, At Fort William a skating carnival is slated to be held March 10 and 11, and April 2 and 3 will see a similar event at Wood- stock. Bobcaygeon will stage an ice re- view March 31, Penetang will hold a winter carnival, with other events than skating, February 24-26, At Port Sydney on Mary NE DEVELOPMENT Ey FLESHERTON--MARKDALE--AREA B87 Miles from Toronto vie MWighwey 10 MAIN HILL $355; dn 20305 tone.
