H, Atkinson of Oshawa is 8 man with definite views on municipal politics, on the role to be played by city eouncils under the democratic system. He can express these views with skill, clarity snd imagination ~~ this became obvious last Tuesday at City Council's inauguration, His was one of the better inauguration speeches locally in recent years, if not the best, Mr, Atkinson, the minis~ ter at Albert Street United Church, did not point the set 2222 Youths Charged rmany Force [5% vim dm *9 : Ge y coat wi. toms 10 With Removing | To Train Here? C. 1. ATKINSON sgined that the thrusts to our democracy came only on a national government level, It can happen on a municipal level, where, be~ cause of apathy on the part of the people, and the de~ sire [or power on the part of an individual, or a group, the sweet smell of success becomes pretty heady odor to the elected representatives of the people, who, gs the servants of the people, soon imagine themselves to be masters of the people and above criticism or eomplaint"' "BEHIND-THE-SCENES" ACTIVITY He had words of warning elso for what he termed "too much behind-the-scenes IN CAMERA activity," that creates suspicion and mistrust in the public mind, The old adage, "What people don't know doesn't hurt them" is outdated, People are better informed today, They have more access to news of what is going on in the world, and, more especially, is their curiosity aroused about what is going on in their own city, He seid; "No man, no policy, no group, no institu tion can set itself up beyond eriticism, I know, as a preacher, that all criticism is not fair or responsible, but we have less to fear from hot-headed, rash ecrit- feism than we have from efforts to curtail it." He said any leadership which seeks to stifle, or evade, public eriticism is a poor leadership for any democratic community, "It's about time we got over the habit of treating eriticism as if it were treason, and that merely because a man seeks to criticize us, he is an obstruectionist," The right and responsibility to eriticism Is funda- mental to the democratic mind, The "great ends of life" are not won without pers sistent and responsible thought all along the line. "Let a panacea get Ioose in the field of government and you get a tyranny, whether it is benevolent or malignant, It will flourish vigorously and tragically for awhile, then dies," he added. "Political history students are familiar with the great totalitarian states which have emerged ever since man began to write history Although the most arresting examples of these political panaceas have taken root in soil other than our own, we are living in a fool's paradise if we believe that such could not happen here" ROLE OF THE CHURCH IN POLITICS Mr, Atkinson emphasized most strongly that the Christian Church ("with its love for God and concern for man") was deeply interested in the problem of demorratic government, in all its phases, He added: "There is no desire to manipulate, but a sense or moral responsibility, a responsibility which, we suggest, is also laid upon the shoulders of this Council, "The Church may be out of her role when she seeks to organize political machinery == there would have been a storm if the Church had published a list of 'most desirable' candidates before the most recent municipal election = but she is well within her role when ghe talks about moral responsibilities which rest alike with citizen and leadership Mr, Atkinson has a refreshing, intelligent approach to municipal politics, His words deserve the careful at. tention of all elected representatives, as well as people who are truly interested in a healthy municipal ad- ministration here and elsewhere VISITORS IN OUR FAIR CITY Funny thing about escalators: Some adults have an unholy terror of them, de spite their excellent safety record, Take Mrs, Frank Bedford of Coulsdon, Surrey, England (who ls currently visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mr, and Mrs, John Burke boulevard here) for instance, = \ & She didn't mind taking her first Jet trip (at 75) the other day with her husband 16 fly across the Atlante enroute to Oshawa, but _ balked this week when askad to take a ride on wr at the Oshawa Shopping Centre \ The Bedfords are visiting With their daughter for the first time since June of 1946 when she left them to join her husband in Canada, Mrs, Bedford marked her 78th birthday here Box- ing Day.
