Ventage Press, Dept, N-9, 120 = W, 37, New York 1, ONTARIO TODAY Bulbs for Spring flowers can still be planted Your Garden In October Jobs Of Fall By A. W, RUNDLE YHERE is still time to plant some tulip bulbs around your home to give you some early spring color, If you plant other spring flowering bulbs in November, it is best to cover with a mulch of peat moss to keep the frost out as long as possible, giving the bulbs more time to make roots. Some of your less hardy plants will now need some winter protection, Azaleas and Rhododendrons would like to be protected from the sun and wind with burlap, polyethylene, or water proof paper, Perennials would prefer a mulch of peat moss, straw, leaves or sawdust, Shrubs, trees and evergreens would also benefit from a mulch of some form of humus material such as compost, manure, or peat moss, but this is not too essential, Roses such as Floribundas, Grandi- floras and Hybrid teas will have to be protected in all parts of Ontario, The better method for this type of rose is to mound up with soil or a mixture of peat moss and soil to a depth of 9"-12", This is made easier now by the use of aluminum bands or rose collars which you plaee around the plant and fill with soil or the mixture mentioned, Standard roses are best dug up com- pletely and buried in soil, Shrub or rugosa roses do not need any winter protection, Climbing roses should be laid on the ground and the long branch. es covered with soil and the base of the plant mounded up to protect the graft, Another form of winter protection which is becoming more necessary each year is protection from dogs, mice and rabbits, To keep dogs from your ever- greens you could use repellents, wire or wrap with water proof paper, Mice will work under the snow and eat the ark of shrubs, hedges, fruit trees and evergreens, This can be controlled by spreading poisoned feed in various parts of the garden, To prevent rabbit damage you can apply a material called Sta-Off to your trees and shrubs, or fence off with a wire mesh type fence, When cleaning up your: vegetable garden do not put the tops of blighted tomatoes and potatoes in your compost pile as the spores of this fungus. will live and be put back in your garden again, You can start a compost pile now with the leaves and any green material from the flowers and vegetable garden, Do not forget to water the evergreerts right up until the ground is frozen, Evergreens dry out in winter with the heat through the basement walls, Grass should be cut if grass is over two inches long, and do not leave any leaves on the lawn for winter protection, This is of no value and can be very injurious, : PAGE NINETEEN YES ,,, OF COURSE!
