WHITBY And DISTRICT MAGNOLIA BLOOMS AGAIN It may be that the rather eool summer weather has baf- fled the plant life but in any event, a magnolia tree in Whitby thinks that spring is back again, Mrs, David Mowat, 115 Kent street, above, exam- ines one of the blooms on the spring, the magnolia bloomed before the leaves appeared. Again in July, blooms started to appear again. Mrs. Mowat said that it may not be un- usual for a magnolia to bloom twice in the same year but this particular tree never has in the tree in her yard. Magistrate Crawford Guest, in Whitby traf- fic court, reduced the charge from 40 mph to 37 mph in order that no demerits would be hand- ed down to Frank Brown. PC Kenneth Edwards, of the Whitby Police Department, said that he had been operating the speed watch on Brock street north, on July 22 and had clock- ed Brown's southbound car at 41 mph but had charged him with 40 mph, Brown said that he had been ollowing another car into Whitby d had observed the other driver making some sort of a ignal but he had interpreted it as meaning he was going to make a turn. His Worship sug- gested that the other motorist was signalling that there was a speed trap ahead. Brown said that the other car had pulled over and he had pass- ed it, then crossed the two traffic tapes and was stopped by PC Edwards. He said that he had driven 200 miles to save getting demerit marks. He maintained that the trap was at the foot of the hill leading into Whitby but Cpl, Wil- filam Middleton, who conductea the Crown's case, suggested that it was more than two blocks south of the base of the hill and 1500 feet from the first sign warn- ing of a 30 mph zone. His Worship said that he would reduce the charge to 37 mph to save demerits. Phil Hall, Bob Carnegie and Glen Lotton each scored a trio of goals for the Whitby team with Terry Davis coming in with two goals and four assists. Ken Ross added a singleton. For the losing visitors, it was Pete Berge and Wayne Young with a pair and single tallies to Wally Thoren, their captain, and John Inglis. Lotton also picked up two assists for the OLA champs. We spent several days with Wren Blair and his family at their cottage in the Highlands of Haliburton. Things should be picking up in this corner with the opening of training camps for various major hockey clubs just around the corner, While we were away, the Whitby Red Wings' Junior "A" lacrosse club captured the OLA Junior "A" league championship, with a splendid first place finish. They ended the regular season on a winning note, as they claimed three important victories over their closest rivals, the St. Catharines Athletics and the Brampton Excelsiors -- two of them from the Excel- siors -- and finally after nine unsuccessful attempts claimed their first road victory in Brampton. Incident=- ally, that victory in Brampton proved to be the only defeat the Excelsiors suffered in their familiar sur- roundings for the entire 1960 season. An even bigger factor about the Red Wings winning the league title was their perfect home record -- experiencing nary a defeat. Last night at the Whitby Community Arena, the Wings opened a best-of-seven Eastern Canada OLA Junior A semi-final series against the St. Cath= arines Athletics. The results:of that game should appear elsewhere on this page. The second game of that set goes back to St. Catharines tomorrow night. Friday night of this week these two clubs return to Whitby for the third tilt, with the fourth in St. Cath= arines on Saturday night. THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, August 9, 1960 S Old Graveyards Being Located TORONTO (CP)--The Ontario government is prepared to let the dead rest in peace but is curious to know where. A two - man team from the health department's division of environmental sanitation has spent thé last five years criss- crossing the province in search of lost or abandoned graveyards. Most of Ontario's estimated 5, 000 graveyards were small, one- family plots usually occupying an 'acre in an out-of-the-way part of a rural community, When families moved away, the cemeteries were forgotten and soon the graves were overgrown with weeds and the stones moved or destroyed. That may seem like a silly thing to say when everyone knows that business is booming. But with new price lists arriving every other day, always increases, the merchant is treading an uneasy path. Every time he places an order he has to pay a lot more for it than he did a few years ago, just to keep his stock up to date. On top of that, many of his customers crab about prices. A sud- den drop in prices may mean that many a merchant caught with a large stock of high-priced goods would be wiped out. On the other hand, con- tinued inflation provides headaches aplenty.
