12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, July 19, 1960 HARRY JEROME Canadian Sprinter Sets World Re a" CLIPS 3/10 OFF 100-METRE MARK cord VANCOUVER (CP) -- If I'm right I know I'll be there," says Harry Jerome, 19-year-old Van- couver spring sensation, in look- ing forward to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. "There's 'not much more 2a coach can do for me at this stage," the fleet son of a CNR porter sald in a recent interview here. The quiet - spoken Jerome flashed to a world record of 10 seconds for the 100 metres Friday night in the Canadian Olympic trials at Saskatoon. " "He has matured as a run- per," says Lloyd Swindells, coach of Vancouver Olympic Club and a staunch Jerome sup- porter. "There's no questioning his international calibre, but it's up to Harry how far he goes." EQUALS STANDARD Harry, one of only six Cana- dians to equal the Olympic qual- ifying standard, has done it in both the 100 and 200 metres. Much of the credit for his re- cent consistency must go to Bill Bowerman, head coach of Oregon University and one of the best track men in the United States. Five of his runners have made the U.S. track team, Jerome and Sig Ohlemann, a Vancouver half- miler, are expected to Teach Rome on the Canadian squad. At home and during workouts the trim good-looking youth is af- fable, eager to make new friends. has done the 100 yards in 9.4 sec- onds, the second time beating the world's acknowledged leading sprinter, Ray Norton of the US, Jerome remembering his dis- mal performance at the 1959 Pan- American Games where he failed to place for the finals in his spec- {alties, works out two hours daily. Starts and a tendency to stride are the main problems. "Last year I ran against the clock. Now I try to beat the man. Records will come, but they aren't much good if you don't get there in front." Jerome gave up promising foot- ball and baseball starts for the cinder path. He's a lover of jazz and calypso music and hopes to learn how to dance and swim during the summer, WANTS TO COACH The five-foot, 10-inch 165-pound sprinter looks to a career as a track coach when his running days are over. Causing as much a stir, but on the distaff side, is Harry's younger sister Valerie, 17. The willowly teen-ager was also on the 1959 Pan-American squad. A brother, Howard, 15, and sisters, Caroline, 17, and Louise, 6, are content to be fans. But dad, Harry Sr., is both flattered and grateful. Harry Sr., is a porter on the CNR's Kelowna-Vancouver run. He talked about the 100-metre event, "The false start--one of the runners broke early -- didn't bother me. . . . Everything went right, I guess. can't remember much until about halfway. Then I started my arms moving faster and remem- bered to keep my legs up high." Jerome has run the 100 yards in 9.4 three times. The world rec- ord is 9.1 "The nine-flat 100 yards will be made by some guy who works at it real hard for about two years," he said. SPORT SNAPSHOTS By JACK SULLIVAN . Canadian Press Staff Writer "As of this moment, the fight is on," said Carl Baker as he crossed his legs and fingers. 'But let me tell you about those jerks in New York." The "jerks" he referred to hap- pen to be Baker's bosses. That doesn't bother the publicity chief for the scheduled Aug. 8 world light-heavyweight title bout in Toronto between champion Ar- chie Moire and Germany's Erich Schoeppner. Specifically, the biggest '"'jerk" in Baker's book is Bill Fugazy of Feature Sports, Inc., who is co-promoter of the fight with Tor- onto's Dave Rush, TASN'T SHOWN fight. So he barrels off around the States. The guy paying the bills is Rush, and ke hasn't got fish-hooks in his pocket. He goes first class." Baker, a non-stop talker who is in the advertising business in In- dianapolis, was interviewed in the Toronto fight headquarters, a salon in a downtown hotel. The fight, originally scheduled for July 18, was set back because Moore couldn't make the 175- pound limit by that time. 'So, this just costs Rush an ex- tra $20,000 or so in promotion costs which will bring the total to around $70,000. We had the tickets printed with the July 18 date. We had posters and sta- tionery printed and then we've got to re-order everything.
