By RUKINI DEVI Canadian Press Correspondent BOMBAY (CP) -- A delegation of Indian parliamentarians has returned from Bhutan with en- thusiastic impressions of that tackle subversion by Red China. Bhutan, with an area of 18,000 square miles and a population of 700,000, is a land of lofty moun- tains sandwiched between India and Communist-occupied Tibet. In many ways the Bhutanese have lived in greater isolation from the outside world than even the Tibetans. The Indian visitors found the Bhutanese in a hurry to catch up with the outside world. Thirty- one-year-old Maharajah Jig-Me Dorji Wan-chuk told the delega- tion leader, Dr. Ram Subhag Singh: "Our morale is high and we are fully confident of frustrat- ing any moves by Communist China to harm our sovereignty | ~=1 territorial integrity." Himalayan kingdom's ability to PF Bhutan Enters Modern World The delegation said the Chinese have committed "cartographic aggression" on Bhutan, claiming in their maps some parts of] -ortheast Bhutan belong to Pe- king, . vr. Singh submitted to Prime inister Nehru an 11-page report of his observations in Bhutah, and said later in an interview that the Bhutanese are strongly anti - Communist and have the friendliest feelings towards India and the democracies. REFUGEES FROM TIBET "They are making adequate preparations to defend their frontiers," he said. "If the Chi- nese encroach upon Bhutanese territory there will be stiff re- sistance." Dr. Singh said he found no evidence that the Bhutanese were trying to establish direct relations with Peking. Under a 1949 treaty, New Delhi is in charge of Bhu- tan's foreign affairs. The delegation confirmed re- ports that Tibetan refugees still are crossing into Bhutanese ter- ritory and brew' ° pression that Tibet still is far from having been su Red China. India is rushing a $30,000,000 road - building program . to end Bhutan's geographical isolation. At present, the capital city of Paro can be reached from the Indian border tovmn of Jaigaon only after six days of hazardous mule-back journey. Simultaneously, India has un- dertaken to sppply Bhutan with agriculture ®xperts, doctors, en- gineers and students. Until re- cently, the Bhutanese capital had only three doctors. The popula- tion, including members of the Royal Family, placed greater re- liance on the "magic lotions" of native doctors. STEADY CHEWER CALABOGIE, Ont.
