RUNDLE OW is the time to relax and enjoy your garden, the heavy work of preparing and planting being almost completed. What a thrill to watch the flowers grow and bloom and the vegetables maturing! Your radish, green onions, peas, and beans that may be on your table now, are your reward for the hard work that was done in May. The hot weather of this season makes it necessary for us to check our moisture conditions. Shallow rooted plants, and grass will suffer quickly from lack of mois- ture. Also newly planted trees and shrubs, and roses, will need some artificial watering, There are many methods of applying water, but whatever method you may use, be sure to soak the ground thoroughly to a depth of 6 inches and then leave it for several days. Do not sprinkle the surface of the soil daily. Warm weather also brings one of our worst pests, the aphids. These come in many colors and shapes, but can all be destroyed by a spraying or dusting with DDT or Malathion, or combination of the two. The Red Spider or Spider-Mite is not as easily detected because it is not visible to the naked eye. It will attack most plants and will cause evergreens to become light brown in color. In your vegetable garden you will watch your potato and tomato plants for bugs. Spraying could be done to prevent blight. In order to make your leisure time more enjoy- able, you could now plan and start preparing your outdoor living area. Choose an area which has easy access to the kitchen if possible, but 'it'is just as essen- tial that you have some privacy. Privacy may be achieved in many ways, such as fencing, panels of fiberglass, louvered panels. Or another good method is by planting trees and shrubs. Having attained this you could provide a floor or base to sit and play on. A stone or cement product will be most practical, and a smooth surface could be easily cleaned. If shade is needed to make your patio more com- fortable, you will find the fiberglass panels a very good material, as it allows the light to pass through. The garden should present a pleasant view from this patio area, and where planting is not possible, the use of urns, tubs, and planter boxes with evergreens, an- nual flowers, or pot plants will add greatly to the in- terest of your outdoor living room.
