12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, June 7, 1960 'Sage Often By Eb WILKS Acsoclated Press Staff Writer The first week or 10 days of the American League season, Baltimore Orioles were winning with Jim Gentile"s bat and a bunch of kid pitchers, and most everyone said, "Forget 'em, it can't last." Now it's June, the season's al- most two months old and Gentiles stil' sluging, the kid pitchers are still winning and the Birds lead by 2% games. Gentile hit his seventh home run of the season and drove in three runs Monday night, back- ing a six-hit pitching job by Chuck Estrada for a 6-1 victory over Washington. It was the fifth success in seven games for the Orioles and added a half-game to their lead over the idle second- place Cleveiand Indians. SOX' FOURTH STRAIGHT Chicago's third place White Sox moved within a half game of the Indians with their fourth straight victory, getting past the New York Yankees 3-2 with an unearned run in the ninth. That was the only other game sched- uled in the American League. In the lone National League game, St, Louis rapped the last- place Philadeiphia Phillies 5-2 for righthander Larry Jackson's sixth straight victory. First place Pittsburgh and sec- ond place San Francisco, a game Surmise' Otherwise pair as the Orioles scored three in the third against the Senators and rookie Jim Kaat (1-5), who lost his fifth in a row. The seventh-inning home rum, off reliever Bill Fischer, gave Gentile a 2-for-4 night, good for a fourth-place. .340 average in the American League. NEAR SHUTOUT Estrada, now 6-1 with his fourth straight victory, had a two-hit shutout unti' the seventh and finished with a six-hitter. The Senators, dropping to seventh, got their rur on singles by Hal Naragon, pinch hitter Elmer Valo and Faye Throneberry. For a great part of the season his average remained His story is truly an amazing one. The Braves purchased his contract from the Indianapolis Clowns back in 1952. He reported to the Eau Claire Club of the Class C Northern League and pro- ceeded to hit .336 in 87 games. He was voted the loop's outstanding rookie as well as the All Star shortstop. The following year, Hank wag promoted to the Class A. Jacksonville Club and was sta- tioned at second base when the season got underway. Fans throughout the South Atlantic League will long remember the batting feats of young Aaron. He topped the circuit in batting, runs scored, total bases, doubles and runs batted in and was runner up in home runs and triples. As might be expected, he was voted the league's Most Valuable Play- er, Aaron switched to the outfield while playing ball in Puerto Rico in 1954. When Bobby Thomson fractured his ankle during spring training of 1954, Aaron, who was one of several farm-hands invit- ed to train with the parent club, stepped into a job which he has held ever since and one which he will undoubtedly retain for many years to come, Henry not only was the game's leading hitter last season, but he was also the slugging leader and hecame the first National League player to hit the 400 mark in total bases since Stan Musial ac- complished the feat back in 1948. Yes, Hank Aaron is quite a talented young man and his tal- ents with a baseball bat could pro- v.de th» highlight of the Braves appearance here.
