SATURDAY, MARCH 26 ¥ ®* 3 ONTARIO TODAY Crown height is the one definite fashion decree. Other- wise the brim may be small or large; the hat may be .. worn straight-on or off-the-face. If there is one trend, it is . toward the wide-eyed youthful look. This is seen in off- face berets and bretons. It was established as the newest]: 3 look by the Millinery Institute of New York even before St. Laurent of Dior's Paris House endorsed the young Dior's small and deep cloche of beige georgette on net, manipulated crown of folds, with trim of white lily of the valley in the brim. T a recent millinery luncheon in New York, awards were made to seven of the best-hatted women in the U.S.A. One was singer Celeste Holm who confessed to having 34 hats in her current wardrobe. This is wishful thinking for practically every woman. The average Spring hat-buying spree usually results in not more than two hats per person. These must be chosen with care to suit' the wearer personally, to fit into the color scheme of her wardrobe and also be related to her type of living--career woman or housewife, suburban or city. This Spring there is more fashion latitude than usual. look. Fortunately, since this look does not suit too many women--or even girls--the milliners are also featuring tailored hats with neat little brims and wider hats with -upcurled or down-turned brims. The hat look is slightly heavier this Spring although the hat itself is lightweight, with interest in loosely-woven straws and airy materials. This bulky-but-light and heigh- tened look confroms with the casual simplicity of the clothes, offsets the sleeveless dress and the above-the- elbow coat silhouette. Some of the princess-line costumes (loosely fitting the normal figure) and the full skirts demand the balance 'of c big hat. Even here they are lightweight and airy. Flowers, when used, are either tiny, fragile and massed together or very large, scattered or even themselves form- "ing a hat, especially if swathed in veiling. While all the top New York milliners whose collec- tions I saw agreed in principle on the general Spring silho- uette, each arrived there by his or her own inspiration. Cuban-born Adolfo who designers for Emme went to paint- ings for his collection--sort of bold "drawings" for the head. In fact, one group in bali straw bretons is straight off the heads of children painted by Renoir. John Frederics had visited Puerto Rico and fallen in love with it. Many of his hats--and even the straws-- interpret the island, with upswept native hat styles and tropical flowers. Sally Victor interprets Spring 1960 in terms of New York City. She even created a hat that looks like the exterior of the Guggenheim Museum. Others in her collection are adaptations of hats worn by such popular figures as Jimmy Walker and Mayor Fiorello Laguardia. Mary Sue Miller's Tips For: A Lovelier (®) ou EVER fail to wear sun-glasses, when you are exposed to the sun's glare. Failure may cause such unpleasant consequences as eye strain, head- aches, and temporary decrease in night vision. But of particular concern to lovelies are the wrinkles that multiply from squinting out glare. You do squint, you know, when you face the sun without dark lenses. You cannot help doing so, for it is the eye's means of self-protection. Even when sun-glasses are removed for tanning purposes, the thin skin on the lids should be pro- tected, or it will pucker. A water-dampened cotton ball makes a good cover. A ready-prepared herbal pad, however, would soothe the skin, while shad- ing it. For the under-eye areas, which can become crinkly as much from the drying effects of hot air as from squinting, eye creams are invaluable. You would be wise to apply a film before tanning ses- sions, and always before retiring. If you follow these cues, it's a promise you will not acquire a new wrinkle this summer.
