20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturduy, Merch 19, 1960 Housewives Insist On Atmosphere CHICAGO (AP) -- The home that Americans love te call their eastle may one day be geared Uke a factory. But will it be home? "That's the problem in creat- ing the super-home of the future with all its gadgets," says a Chi- eago paint manufacturer. William M. Stuart, at a meet- ing of the Painting and Decorat- ing Contractors of America, warned that the American woman won't take kindly to a mew home unless it looks like the home of her childhood with its warmth and security. LABORATORY LOOK "The American woman could have robots to cook, clean and 4 housekeeping today i she were willing to live in a home re sembling an electronics labora- tory," he said. According to Stuart, women want labor-saving devices, but they won't sacrifice traditional beauty to get them. "No matter how physically comfortable or practical it might be, an all-tile-and-plastic room that could be cleaned or even sterilized hospital clean in min- utes would prove unattractive to women," he said. . IMPROVEMENTS AHEAD Stuart predicts finishes for homes will be more durable, eas- ier to clean, dust-repellent and easier to re-decorate. He envisions windows that open themselves, push-button and furniture that dusts itself. But the problem is to make the machinery of the home virtually invisible. "We know how to build more practical homes than we do, but no one would care to live in them," Stuart said. | DO IT You will be acting in your own best interest, and at the same time be helping your community, if you get your repairs, remodel- ling, interior decoration, mainten- ance and clean-up work done now. Floor Materials: Now Decorative Modern flooring materials have outgrown simple utility and now freqgently qualify on their own as the prime center of design inter- est in the decoration of a room. More than a thousand different colors are available in a remark- able range of textures and pat- terns. Rubber and solid vinyl tiles range from replicas of an- cient marbles to oak planks and terrazzo. There are metallic nat- terns which appear to be sprinki- ed with gold, silver and jewels. Since pre-cut insets and feature strips are easily available in mul- ticolors, it_now is possible for the amateur interior decorator to achieve professional distinction of design. Solid vinyl and vinyl combina- tion floors are particularly easy to install. A paintbrush spreads the adhesive and ordinary scis- sors will cut the tile to fit the edges of a room. While miracle plastic tiles are increasing im popularity, other types of flooring still have much to offer. Linoleum, most familiar of all resilient floors£ is made in a broad range of designs and col ors. i Linoleum tile is am easier te handle form of the same material -- regular linoleum cut into block form. Least expensive of all perman- ent resilient floor is asphalt tile, which gained tremendous popular- ity during and just after World War II. It since has met heavy competition from more luxurious floors -- but still is papular, pecially for basement and creation rooms. Nothing has yet been able surpass the foot comfort of tile, and its warm tone makes i a natural choice for bedrooms. Rubber tile also offers luxurious softness underfoot and has top re- silience to indentation. SPRING A GOOD HAVE TIME TO THOSE.
