8 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, March 19, i960 FOR KITCHEN CONVENIENCE Among recent additions to kitchen engineering are appli- ance centers like this one, which provide electric horsepower where its needed. A 220-volt, 3-wire cable brings power to the built-in unit, which can then pro- vide full wattage to as many as five electric appliances at one time. K is equipped with three retractable cords, iwo convenience outlets and a timer. Materials Need Simple Technique THERE are a number of mate- rials in every home which re- quire a special, though simple, technique for a good paint job. Here is a guide on how to get! satisfactory results on several of the most commonly used of these | 'problem' materials.: ASBESTOS CEMENT The problem here is the alkalinity of the surface. The solution is to! use alkali - resistant paints. Any | of the following will do the job: two coats of solvent - thinned rubber - based paint; two coats of exterior water. - thinned latex paint; solvent - thinnked rubber- based paint as a primer, follow- ed by a top-coat of any desired exterior paint. HARDBOARD -- The problem here is uneven absorption and uneven gloss resulting from the lack of uniformity of the surface. The solution lies in proper seal- ing of the surface with latex paint, shellae, enamel, under- coater or a primer-sealer, PLYWOOD The problem | here is that the grain pattern oftens shows through the top- coat. The solution consists in proper priming and sealing with two coats. Recommended are penetrating resin sealer, flat oil or alkyd paint, or enamel under- coater. EXTERIOR PLYWOOD -- Th? problems are the same as for intérior plywood, plus the danger of delamination of the plys from rain. The solution consists of | sealing all edges as well as the | surface to be painted with a high grade exterior primer. ALUMINUM -- The problem lis obtaining proper adherence. The solution consists in proper cleaning of the surface to re- | move loose oxide, dirt and grease and then applying a coat of zinc chromate primer. Finish with exterior enamel of desired eolor. GALVANIZED STEEL Again, the problem is proper adhesion. The solution consists of removing all dirt, oil grease and loose rust. Follow with zinc dust- zinc oxide paint as a prime coat. No need to wash new metal with acid. INSULATING SIDING -- The problem is that organic solvents used in conventional paints will cause the asphalt in the siding to bleed through and stain the paint brown. The solution is to {use paints especially formulated for use on asphalt' compositions | or to use an exterior latex (water- thinned) paint. This can be fol- lowed with conventional house paint. COLOR PLAYS TRICKS Bright - colored asphalt roof shingles make a house look tall- er. Subdued roof colors, on the other hand, are recommended to make a tall house look lower. RA 5-1151 By ANDY LANG The entrance of power tools into the workshop of the home handyman has not eliminated the need for a variety of hand tools. A project on which elecirically- driven machines are being util- ized can be stymied by the ab- sence of a particular hand tool at the proper moment during the undertaking. As a general rule, most persons use a reasonable amount of care in the selection of power tools. Price naturally plays a part in their choice, but they give con- sideration to other factors. They look at the construction of a ma- chine, want to see how it oper- ates and express more than pass- ing interest in the name of the manufacturer. In short, there is a firm realization in the value of quality. They want a product that will give good service and have a long life. This attention to quality is far less noticeable in the matter of hand tools. The average person, unlike the professional mechanic, is far too inclined to put price first in the purchase of screw- drivers, pliers, hammers and other hand fools. Yet it is in this particular area where quality is vital, since a poorly-made hand tool will not work properly from the start, entirely aside from the fact that it may be completely inoperative in a short time. QUALITY IS VITAL K is unfortunate, but true, that most of us cannot detect the difference between a good hand tool and a poor ome. We know only after we have used it. The appearance of a quality tool is copied closely. The professional can tell the difference "instantly. The amateur can not, What, then, is the solution to this ever-present problem? How do you and I know that the hand tool we are about to buy is a good one? Frankly, we can't be sure. We have to rely, to a certain ex- tent, on the reliability of the manufacturer and, to a certain extent, on the price, since we can- not escape the fact that, in this Roller Ready For Any Job No matter y your painting job, there's a roller made for the purpose. They come with a tiny surface for painting next to wood- work and for window frames; others are wide enough to cover an entire wall in a couple dozen strokes. There's also variety in handles. Some are up to six feet long so you can paint the ceiling while standing on the floor, Different types of finish are best applied with rollers meant Need Still Seen For Hand Tools realistic world, we generally get what we pay for. But we can inspect and feel and compare the merchandise, not only to get the best buy at the moment, but to gain the shopping experience that will en- able us to be a more discerning purchaser the next time. Even- tually we will be able to tell in- stantly, as a professional can, which hand tool falls into the quality class. Even if you cannot determine whether a tool is well made merely by looking at it, you may be able to categorize it quickly when you compare it with an- other tool "selling at a different price. A properly-balanced ham- mer will feel comfortable and will have a grip that is secure. A good pair of pliers will have jaws that meet perfectly, with no gap- ping between the teeth and no scaling or sharp edges.on the handle. And so on.
