You can't lay the blame for ity, this on the builders of the house. Twenty years ago, . folks electricity 'to supply light and stance, was a refrigerator. In the kitchen of a home, you might easily find a dozen electric appliances, each a |; handy work saver for the house- wife. And the number of electric ap- pliances in homes keeps increas- ing. Automatic washers, clothes Floor Depends Cn Subsurface Even the most aristocratic tile design can be no better than its subfloor, Installation of long wearing types of resilient flooring like rubber vinyl should be planned carefully as they can be counted on to keep their good looks for the life of the building with min- imum maintenance. If laid over a smooth subfloor, they will never buckle, curl or splinter. Rough or uneven floors fre- yuently can be made smooth by machine sanding. Small irregu- larities which sanding cannot remedy often can be corrected by use of paiching materials. When the subfloor is wood, it's very important to hammer down and countersink protruding nails with a nail punch. Pay particular attention to patching cracks as | well as holes. Plane or sand any joints that are rough or uneven. When in doubt, it's a wise long | lay a| term investment to new subfloor of plywood or press- ed board. It is usually best to take up old flooring covering and molding entirely. Then clean the floor thoroughly. Make sure to remove all dirt, wax, old paints, grease, etc. Z Most tiles are cemented down with fast setting adhesives to ob- tain smooth floors; they should be rolled immediately before the adhesive sets. According to the Rubber and Vinyl Flooring Coun- cil, each three or four rows should be rolled as they are com- pleted for best resulis. Watch out particularly for joints of adjoining tile which are not even in the finished floor. High and low joints create dirt pockets which are particularly unattractive on light colored tile.
