Engineering improvements are making possible use of wall- Uses New Ideas WASHINGTON -- When taking about the Home of the Future, | even the best-informed expert needs a high-powered crystal ball. The truth is that nobody can tell for certain what a typical new residence will look like 25] years from now. | Less spectacular but more firmly grounded in fact are pre- dictions about materials and tech- niques that will be used in con- structing the House of the Fu- ture. One of the channels these new products and concepts use in getting from the manufacturer to the public is the Research Insti- tute of the National Assn. of Home Builders. Here's a description from Ar- chitect Herman York, a trustee of the institute, of some of the promising developments currently receiving attention. Many are now emerging from the experi- mental stage and either are, or soon will be, on the market: In a research house built at South Bend, Ind., the exterior | walls and roof were built of "sandwich panels" with foamed | plastic core and plywood skins. an aftractive redwood exterior an! | ground brick are used in panels | The wall panels are 3" thick with | for attractive interior decor. toilets im residential bathrooms. The advantage in cleaning ease is apparent. Research House have thermal qualities better than conventional construction Because of the speed of erection, such walls can be built at lower {cost than using the usual wood stud method with its multiple layers of miscellaneous materials In many sections of the coun- try, houses are built on slabs of concrete. A new foaming process for concrete makes possible a! warmer floor due to the insulat- ing value of the air bubbles which form a part of the final product, A new kind of door is being used in some of today's hoiises. | It is placed '"'on" the opening in- stead of "in" it. It operates much like a refrigerator door. In some instances these doors are 8 feet high (from floor to ceiling) reducing the work involved in building a wall above the door. The hardware is simple and less expensive. Such high doors ventil- ate the room more efficiently. Plastics are finding many new uses, particularly on the interior. Accent panels made to look like brick are light in weight and eas- ily formed to suit many condi- | tions. It's known as a sashless window and eliminates a frame, giving greater visibility. Simple hardware provides positive pres- sure at the centre overlap of the glass. One of the newer items receiv- ing universal acceptance is the wall hung toilet. Formerly this kind of water closet has been used chiefly in commercial instal- lations requiring high water pres- sures and larger piping. They were noisy and not suited for residential use. The ease of maintenance of wall hung fix- tures is readily apparent. In the bathroom fixture area are such new products as one piece molded polyester reinfore- ed plastic lavatories. The vanity top and lavatory are one piece, eliminating the joint and produc- ing a more easily cleaned sur- face. Researchers are working on one piece bathrooms in which the entire room, wall, floors, ceiling and fixtures are molded of one integral material, without joints or seams, The maintenance of houses is an important factor of cost to a home owner. Much research is going on in the field of plastic and vinyl coated materials to pro- duce attractive lasting finishes.
