Also I am the eldest of five, often looked to for advice. My youngest brother, Eddie, 20, pre- sents the problem. Eddie always has been some- thing of a problem -- moody, short - tempered, intolerant, He refused to finish high school and served three years with the Ma- rines, Since then he has lived with me. Recently he met Ann, who is still in school, and they plan to be married in Jupe, After a few dates, Ann told Fddie tearfully that she is mentally ill, and her well-to-do parents prohibit psy- chiatric help, as it would hurt them "professionally and so- cially." They live in a northern town and enjoy a good status, apparently. HOME LIFE UNHAPPY Her' problem, she says, Is being "in love" with another girl --with whom she has had a liai- son for some years, 'Currently they are trving to break this off, while remaining friends. 1 feel Ann 's using Eddie as a crutch, to prove herself normal and also to escape an unhappy heme and get help. (She hates her parents, she ays). And 1 don't think he is able to help her, even if she were his resnonsibil- ity, as he is unstable and imma- ture too. Further, for lack of schooling he has to accept mar- ginal labor jobs and his salary is meagre--so specialist fees are out of the question. Eddie has confided the story in mother, who in turn has discussed it with "me--but I am not sup- posed to know. Lately Eddie shows signs of wanting to confide in me, and I want to heln--but fear 1 may say the wrong things. I feel Ann's behavior is abnormal and may say so. JUST A PHASE Eddie tells mother that Ann's family doctor has said she is jus! going through a phase of normal development, that most girls zo through. But I am a nurse, and have yet to know any girls in col- lege dormitories or nurses' train- ing who formed such attach- ments. Knowing that mother knows the story, Ann has been bringing the other girl .to the house--as to 2 haven of normalcy though mother has no desire to become involved in group therapy. She is so upset she's beside herself From what I have written, can iyou determine how malignant the {situation is? B.C. Like birds of a feather, they flock together. | Your brother Eddie seems geared for trouble; predisposed, as it were, to make life hard for himself unnecessarily. And Ann seems mare or less fixated in the same direction, As to the significance of Ann's involvement with the girl friend |--who is, vou say, "admittedly lattracted to' other girls too," --T think it probably means that Ann is more subnormal than abnor- mal, emotionally. | The trend of current events |with the girl friend still sticking along, even accompanying Ann to her fiance's home, suggests that the other girl is probably the aggressor (or was) in their long-time liaison, and Ann her vietir, who can't quite cope with her, INFANTILE BEHAVIOR In appealing to Eddie, and also your. mother, for sympathy and protective succor, Ann is hohav- ing with infantile ca~dor, naivete land poesibly instinctive cunning to trv to recruit help for her wer kness which is being ex- ploited by the girl friend. he picture is accurate, it suggests further that the other girl is be- having with confident deviate malice, in playing a cat-and- mouse game with Ann, her. prey, by pursuing her, cynically, into the new association with Eddie Girls who get involved with de- viate alliances usually have a personal history of cloudy ill-will towards parents (one or both) nd Ann's testimony fits the pat- tern.
