208 THE OSHAWA TIMES, PROGRESS EDITION, Fridey, February 27, 1959 Steelworkers Join Salute The following statement was issued by Keith Ross, district rep- resentative of the United Steel workers of America: The United Steelworkers of America wish to join in the salute to the progress of Osh- awa, and do sc with the feel- ing that as part of organized labor we have been a con- tributing factor to progress. The organized labor move- ment believes that through the process of collective bar- gaining, the industrial worker has been able to maintain a standard of living which pro- vides him and his family with many things that help a com- munity progress, such as homes, cars, and furnishings for the home. The union will continue to improve the standard of living of its mem- bers and also in so doing, con- tinue to assist in further pro- gress of our City, In progress there is never an end. These advances are necessary in the field of education, with the need of more schools; industry, with a great need for more in- dustry; employment, with a need for and ever increasing desire on the part of all peo- ple, as well as governments, to stabilize our economy to the point that mass unemploy- ment does not exist. As we look back and take pride in the progress. of our City we must also roll up our sleeves and get busy so that continued progress can be assured, and the union move- ment will, as in the past, ac- throughout Canada and the Upit- od States. He, as the owner of over 200 pleces of property, al- ways fought against high taxes, feeling that they were not in the best Interests of citizens at large any more than they were in his own, Mr. Stacey took an active part in the subdivision of Oshawa both before and after it became in- corporated as a city. Using his knowledge of real estate gained during his years in the building trade he was always careful to see that the best interests of the city were served in this matter and it is no doubt due to his clear vision and foresight that Oshawa has enjoyed the smooth and prosperous expansion that Parks Play Vital Role All work and no play would make Oshawa a dull dish. A city needs its recreational facilities as much as its factories and houses -- especially parks and open spaces which can be used by the family as a unit as op- posed to other centres of relaxa- tion which, in many cases, cater for adults only. Parks are a community's lungs, and Oshawa is not over-endowed with the larger variety. Needed are more areas such as Lake- view -- even bigger -- where families without the time or transportation for trips into the country can spend a day or half day and yet absorb much of the atmosphere of an out-of-town ex- cursion. Fitting this bill is a new 250- acre provincial park, just to the east of Oshawa, on arlington Township's lakeshore, which should be ready for use by June.
