84 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, October 31, 1958 | 'Grandma Coull' Still Follows S.A. Home League She Started The Salvaiton Army Home League is part of a great inter- mational organization, with groups organized in nearly every coun- try in the world. It was first organized over 50 years ago in Lendon, England, and quickly spread to Canada. . The Oshawa Home League was organized 40 years ago by Mrs. David Coull, who is still an ac- tive member, now 90 years old and known to ali as '"'Grandma". The Home League was origin- ally started for the benefit of mothers with small children who could not attend a regular church service and it has developed into an organization suited to all ages. Today the Home. League uses the four-fold plan -- Spiritual, So- cial, Fellowship and service to others. In Oshawa the Home League meets every Tuesday afternoon in the Salvation Army Hail. It is interdenominational and nearly every church is represented. There are 194 members on the roll with an average attendance of 75 at the afternoon meetings. We also have five groups who meet during the week in the evenings. They are the Cheerio group, Mrs. Thomas Salisbury, leader; The Rainbow Group, Mrs. Thomas Myers, leader; The Fellowship Group, Mrs. George Beard, leader; he ' Sunshine Circle Group, Miss Maude Sar- geant, leader; The Missionary Group, Mrs. Charles Langfield, leader. The projects of the Home League are varied. In the non- Christian countries the Home League teaches the women to cook and to sew and how fo keep their homes clean and how to iook after their children. In Oshawa the women knit and do embroidery, and crochet work, make flowers and decorate haskets. They raise money to aid those in missionary lands, and te help make a better world for the in our own country. ing, and each devotional period is different and special events, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, etc., are all remembered and used to good advantage. The Home League has its own choir, known as the Home League Singers, under the direction of Mrs. Chris Osbourn. We also have our own news- letter published each month and edited by Mrs. Maynard Nelson. In September we start our fall activities with Rally Day, when we have a special afternoon. Each November we have our saie of work, and afternoon tea. This year our sale is to be held on November 21, Wiliam Saunders Home League secretary, after being in charge for 14 years.
