'Public Speaking, Leadership Part of Jaycettes Program The Oshawa Jaycettes, wives of members of the Oshawa Junior Chamber of Commerce, were or- ganized as an auxiliary in Sep- tember 1954. Dinner meetings are held the third Thursday of -each month at 6:30 p.m. .Our organiation takes an ac- tive part in civic services in asso- ciation with the Jaycees. The members are offered courses for self development such as effective speaking and leadership training. Through organied activities of a social nature our members bene- fit in fellowship and friendship. In the coming year we will be taking an active part in Brother- hood, Canadianism and Traffic and Home Safety. In September 1957 plans were made for the Region V Jaycette fall conference for which we were the hostesses. This was our first undertaking of this nature and the experience proved beneficial to all our members. Those attending the conference were given clinics on Parliamentary Procedure and Ladership Training. The confer- ence was successfully organied by Mrs. Walter Libby. Dr. Vipond was guest speaker at Sunday din- ner. Other guests were Rev. H. A. Mellow, Mr. Gordon Baker, Mayor Naylor and Mr. J. Ruther- ford. At our October meeting Mr. Harrison Murphy, Principal of OCCI spoke of his trips to the Rocky Mountains and later show- ed excellent films he had taken on these trips. In November Mrs. Oakley Crawford demonstrated the art of gift wrapping by wrap- ping several parcels, explaining the finer points of decorating as she wrapped. In December we held our annual Christmas Party. In January Mr. William Carey gave a clinic on effective speak- ing explaining points and rules to follow when preparing speeches. On Friends' Night, Mr. Emery Baldry, district manager London Life Insurance Co. spoke to us on life insurance. Our annual Men's Night was again a success under the leader- ship of Mrs. A. Gravel. We enter- tained with a Family Album theme depicting snapshots of sev- eral generations. Included in the skits were dance routines, recita- tions and quartet singing. In the fall six of our members enjoyed an inter-club visit to the Scarboro Jaycettes and in May 1958 twelve of our members visit- ed a newly formed Auxiliary in Newmarket. Mrs. Wm. Edwards and Mrs. R. Dewland travelled to Richmond Hill to help organize a Jaycette Auxiliary in that com- munity. Fund raising projects were: Christmas Hamper Draw, chair- man, Mrs. J. Rutherford; Auction Sale of items donated by mem- bers, Auctioneer, Mrs. F. Whal- ley; Square and Round: Dance, chairman," Mrs. D. Knowler; re- freshment booth at Jaycee Home- builders Fair, chairman, Mrs. J. Jeffs. In the past year we made the following donations: a cheque to the Community Chest; each Christmas we give gifts and sup- ply lunch to the boys in Jury House, Bowmanville Training School; in April we donated to the Cerebral Palsy Association an 8 mm. Kodak Movie Projector; at our Annual Installation Night in June a cheque for $100 was pre- sented to the Jaycees toward their Traffic Safety program; a brief case for the Jaycee secre- tary was also presented. Last November the J. ayceds and Jaycettes were allotted an office in the Bell Telephone Co. building for the Get Out to Vote telephone blitz in connection with the munic- ipal elections. Two of our mem- bers attended courses in Civil De- fence and the president was a mem of the city's Civil De- fence Control Committee. In May our annual meeting is held at which time annual reports are given and election of officers held. The following officers for 1958-59 were installed in June at the Joint Installation Night with the Jaycees: president, Mrs. Rob- ert Dewland; 1st vice-president, Mrs. Donald Brown; 2nd vice- president, Mrs. Roy Smith; sec- retary, Mrs. Donald Lowe; treas- urer, Mrs. J. E. Rutherford. "THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, o AZ October 31, 1958 31 LAE FEY TORONTO (CP) -- A hundred men and women trying to break a silence barrier here have a slim, active woman of 79 as their inspiration. At the age of 47 Mrs, Jessie Freer lost her voice after a throat operation. It was 28 years before she regained the ability to speak. Now she is the oldest in a group of former cancer patients studying speech therapy here at one of the first courses of its type in Canada. Many of them still cannot talk after vital laryngectomy opera- tions which saved their lives but took away their voice-producing laryuxes. FINE EXAMPLE But they have a will to speak again which has been strength- ened by the case of Jessie Freer. Study of the disease was in its infancy when the Scots-born ex- schoolteacher had the operation in 1927. She was believed to have been the first Canadian to sur- vive it. At the time she supported her invalid husband by working with a Torcato law firm. To go into hospital she resigned her job-- but the firm refused to accept her resignation, paid her for two Woman's Recovery Of Lost Voice Is Inspiration To Suffers ~~ years while she was away: and kept the job open umtil she re- turned. . When she came back™ she couldn't speak a word. But she had been given the encourage- ment she needed. "I don't know what would have been my future but for that wouderfub firm," she says. Her home and office left little time for anything but work. Her husband died in 1942 and when she retired in 1953 she found, she had "no contact with the outside world at all." MEANT NEW LIFE The next two years were in- tensely lonely. Then she had the invitation that changed her life-- to a speech-therapy course or- - ganized by the International Laryngectomy A sso ciation in Cleveland. She was the oldest student there. During the second week a delegate asked her a question and "to my utter amazement and joy I found myself answering back--not very clearly, but with a recognizable voice." Today her voice is almost back to normal. She chats happily with friends and neighbors--"a most fortunate woman," she calls her- self.
