20 THE PAILY TIMES GAZETTE, Thursday, August 15, 1957 Arvida Strike May Spread _ QUEBEC (CP) -- The indefin- ite suspension of talks aimed at settling a strike at the Aluminum Company of Canada plant at Ar- vida, Que., has opened the pos- sibility the stoppage may spread. The National Metal Trades Federation (CCCL) called 6,500 workers from the Arvida opera- tion May 17. Votes approving strikes were made in two other Alcan plants in the province, but no action was taken pending out- come of the talks organized here by Labor Minister Antonio Bar- refte. The union has 11,500 work- ers in nine Alcan Quebec plants. Gerard Picard, president of the ST TO Ei GIRL GUIDES oe CANADA HO sroniges » J pes tract to cover Alcan's Quebec province workers. The company balked at the demand, but hope for an end to the strike was raised when Mr. Barrette formu- lated a settlement proposal last month. It did not specifically mention a master contract but recom- mended that wage inequalities in the Aluminum plants be elim- inated by 1959 and a three-year collective agreement be signed by the parties. Ford and Year Of Independence By CHARLES LANE NEW DELHI (AP) -- Ancient India marks her 10th birthday as an independent naticn Thursday. The occasion will also mark the 10th anniversary of India's first and only prime minister--Jawa- harlal Nehru. And there's no in- dication he is thinking of step- ping down As Nehru journeys to Kerala to make the traditional independ- ence day speech, many of his listeners may muse over the pop- ular question both here and abroad: After Nehru, who? The question arises because Nehru towers so high above all around him. No one is so idolized by India's millions. No one's word carries so much weight. No one in the government makes so many decisions MANY FACTORS INVOLVED Many political observers be- lieve that when Nehru finally Canada May Withdraw From Boxing Committee LONDON (Reuters) -- Harry Shepherd, manager of Canadian light-heavyweight boxer Gordon allace, said today Canada may withdraw from the British Com- monwealth and Empire Boxing Championship Committee. Shepherd said the action was contemplated because the pres- ident of the Canadian boxing board of control was 'so upset" at the committees decision to de- prive Wallace of the Empire title. "1 a guarantee from the Canadian boxin + board that only the Canadian national title would be at stake when Wallace met | Yvon Durelle and lost in two rounds at Moncton, N.B., May 0," imed Less does go, the government will swing glightly to the right. The swing probably will not go too far, however. India's short- age of capitai, the nature of some of the projects which must be undertaken in the underdevel- oped country and countless other factors will probably call for a Socialist - type government for years to come. But even today. Nehru is to the left of most of his own cabinet members. After his departure, the influence of these conserva- tive elements probably will be felt more strongly. The man most often mentioned as Nehru's successor is Morarji Desai, 61-year-old minister of commerce and industry. Desai played a prominent role in the| Congress party's campaign for Indian independence. In recent years he has shown himself a good administrator as chief min- ister of Bombay state. f Empire championship committee dethroned Wallace and named Durelle new empire champion. Shepherd will be joined by Wal- lace in London next Saturday and they will both fly to Johannes- burg Monday to prepare for Wal- lace's fight against Mike Holt of South Africa Aug, 31.
