12 TRE DAILY FIMES-GASETTE, Wednesday, Aprfl 10, 1957 Say Auto Dealers Use Misleading Advertising By HAROLD MORRISON Canadi an Press Staff Writer OTTAWA. (CP) -- Bootlegging, | Stude! ce-packing and misleading ad- Poop typify automobile retail ing today, says the Sun Life As- ho surance Company of Canada in a special study on the place of the auto in Canada's future. It criticized some of the current selling practices, charging major [Pro manufacturers with "prime re- sponsibility." But looking ahead over the next quarter-century it saw a banner future for the pas- senger car. Perhaps $1,500,000,000 or more ye may be poured out b; the industry for a Canada's car popu- lation may almost triple to 8, 000. One out of every three Cana. dians may own one, compared with the current one out of every 5.7 The number of families with two cars likely would increase sharply, perhaps more than quadrupling to 935,000 in 1980 from the present 200,000. The small car and the sta- tion wagon were expected to in- crease in popularity as the second car in the suburban home. SEES MAJOR CHANGES The auto itself would undergo major transformation, influenced increasingly by feminine 'bou- doir" type of designing and fish- bowl styling. In fact, remarked the company, the industry was ap- parently determined "to make the automobile a virtual goldfish bowl on wheels." In 25 years the independent pro- ducers, Py as Nash, Hudson Pad ebaker - Packard, might be- ¢ome extinct unless major support was given them. Their demise would leave Ford, General Motors Chrysler as the sole pro- ducers of Canadian cars. Prepared for the Gordon royal commission on Canada's economic prospects, the auto report was made public today, The commission, which made its preliminary report to parlia- ment in Jan and is scheduled al one late this these and other studies to help it reach its con- clusions. Another 21 studies are to be issued later in the year. VOLUME SELLING The Sun Life Company, report- ing on the current auto situation, said the leadership struggle by major producers has placed in- creased emphasis on volume sell- ing which has forced some dealer organizations to the wall. The pro- ducers were mostly to blame for aealer concentration on small profits and big sales, but the deal- ers themselves were partly re- sponsible. "The bootlegging, price-packing "There cau be no doubt, how- ever, that the Tanulaeturos are in a position to restrain the more extreme elements in their retail organizations if they so desire and the fact that they have not done s0 places the prime responsibility or the present situation upon COMPARES WITH U.S. Making some Solugatisla, the company estimated tha the average retail In price of a four-door sedan $2,192 in Canada, up from $914 in 1035; and $1,788 in the United States, up from In Canada, the average dealer's profit or mark-up doubled in the 20 years to from and more than doubled in the U.S. to $339 from $150.
