LACKS SELF-CONFIDENCE How can T learn to have more self-confidence? 1 think lack of self-confidence {is the handicap that prevents my learning to dance. 1 have a good ear for music and love to dance, but when 1 get on the dance floor my feet just won't follow. I imagine that everyone is laughing at me, and of course my husband can't stand my nervous rigidity. Believe me, I've tried many times on crowded dance floors, where nobody would have notlced, when: I made mistakes--but still I couldn't learn. And I am afraid that if I don't improve in this re- spect my husband may have fo |find a replacement for me --pos- nobody to blame but myself, as a duck takes to water. and give a creditable performance without preparation. You ask too much of yourself. Social dancing isn't an inborn knack, that some people bave, or a good game of golf--that has to be learned: by study, mem- ory work and diligent pract'se. Not knowing the fundamentals of good dancing, you vrobably can't accurately appraise the pros and cons of another's perform: ance--not even your husband's --and tend to feel guilty of his mistake as well as your own. Shuffling to music, as many nice people do, isn't dancing worthy of the name; and it takes a very ac- complished woman partner tn sidestep the average man's blund- ers on this score.
