C "Five Steps to Praye -/gave a talk on the work done by nauguration of the Diamond Jibilee year of the Victorian Order of Nurses was marked to- day with the publication of a letter from Prime Minister St. Laurent to the Order's presi- dent, Mr. E. P. Taylor, Toron- to. In this Mr. St. Laurent re- calls how his predecessor Sir Wil- fred Laurier, moved the resolu- tion fn support of founding the Order at a public meeting in Ot- tawa 60 years ago. FOUNDED IN 1897 The VON was founded in 1897 by Ishbell, Marchioness of Aber- deen, wife of Canada's Governor- General at that time, Lord Aber- deen. The National Council of Women, which Lady Aberdeen had also founded, impressed upon nursing service available, part time, to patients across Canada. Charter branches were formed in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, To- jronto and Vancouver and in the following year a Royal Charter was granted to the Order by Queen Victoria. SMALL BEGINNING From those relatively small be ginnings the VON has grown into a nation-wide nursing service with 117 branches, extending from Corner Brook and St. John's Newfoundland, to Nanaimo and Victoria on Vancouver Island. On its staff today are 592 qualified nurses who are prepared to call at the home of any sick person in the community and who work as "Everyone's Nurse" under the di- rection of the family physician. In recent years just under one million visits have been made annually, of which approximately 165,000 were fully paid, 275,000 part-paid, and over half a million given free. The cost of the VON service is met by nursing S, municipal (including coup'ty) grants, private and servi club ctorian Order Of Nurses Marks 60 Years Of Progress donations, a share in Commudty Chest funds, and by special ap- peals where no Chest exists. OYAL INTEREST The continuing interest of the During Jubilee Year, the VON will move its headquarters into a sell Blackburn on Laurier Avenue East, nearly opposite Laurier House. Official opening is ex- pected to take place during the annual meeting, May 8 an 9. PM's LETTER In his letter to Mr, E. P. Tay- Jor, Prime Minister St. Laurent said: "It is a pleasure for me t o pay tribute to the Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada as it enters its Diamond Jubilee Year. It was under distinguished aus- pices indeed that the VON w established in this country years ago, for, at the public meeting which was held in Fab- ruary 1897 to duscuss the found ing of the Order, the Chair was occupied by His Excellency the Governor-General, then Lord Aberdeen, and the unanimous re- solution in support of the proposal was moved by Sir Wilfrid Laurier. In the six decades which have elapsed since the Order received its Royal Charter from Her Ma- jesty Queen Victoria, it has made a noteworthy contribution to the health and well-being of Cana- dians. By the voluntary activities |of its members it has proved its {understanding and has shoulder- ed its share of social responsibil ity toward its fellow-citizens. To you, your colleagues and {staff throughout Canada, I ox- {tend my warm good wishes for ithe future of the VON."
