CHRYSLER OF CANADA has made available for 1957 a range of more powerful V-8 engines. These engines feature unique | dome-shaped combustion cham- | bers which promote greater ef- ficiency through much more ol bustion. Mr. George Orphal, truck sales manager, stated that thjs new; series represented the most ad- vanced trucks Dodge has ever placed on the market. \ "With this introduction," Mr. Orphal said, "we have discarded the old method of tonnage ratings which the increased payloads of our trucks have made obsolete From now on, Dodge truck models will be designated as D100, D300, D400 and so forth." Mr. Orphal continued, "our major new feature this year is the Dodge power story. Because of higher highway speeds and the tremendous growth of the truck- ing industry, truck owners have a right to expect the truck they buy to have the power to handle their job efficiently, We think our line of exterior colors. In the next four years 69 of Canada's 800 mills closed employed. While the market was continu- ally expanding, Canadian textilers The CFF already supplies such service organizations as the Cana-| dian jation of Ci S| with information on Canadian tex- tiles. It stages demonstrations and fashion shows at numerous exhi- bitions, and provides about 60 per 1d by 1954 were shipping only 77 per cent of the backing in a two-way ization is the year-ol : The organi Kate cent of their 1950 value. P. C. Gauthier, general manager of CFF. "The job we've cut out is full- scale, fulltime promotion of Cana- dian fabrics to Canadians. There's no question that such an organiza- tion is badly needed." HARD-HIT INDUSTRY The textile industry in Canada six years ago seemed set for great things, he recalled. In 1950 it sold about $1,000,000,000 worth of goods and filled 67 per cent of Canada's home requirements. Can- adian-made synthetic fibres held 91 per cent of the home market for those goods. Wages close to $180,000,000 were paid to nearly 90.000 workers. Then tne Japanese and Euro. pean war riddled economies surged toward new levels and National Parklands the Canadian producers' slipped to 56 per cent, lowest por- tion since before the 1930s. Textile men decided to do some- thing about it. When a search for increased export markets proved |unrewarding, they named the man who had been searching for them to try expanding the home mar- ket instead. Thus Mr. Gauthier, formerly export promotion direc- tor of the Trade and Commerce Department, became manager of the new foundation. The CFF, he said in an inter- view, wants more members. He expects at least three major cot- ton producers and from 10 to 50 woolen mill representatives to join before year's end. With a workiag budget of possibly $500,- 000--contributed by members in proportion to their size--the orga- nization hopes to establish a se- ries of non-profit Canadian fabrics centres in strategic cities. ciation of Couturiers, in whose fa- an fabrics are used tn promote Canadian de- signs Another aim is to step up co- operation with allied trade groups Clothing manufacturers will be asked to made - in - Canada labels, for in- stance, so that buyers can test for themselves the worth of home- grown fabrics. The CFF should have a clear- cut base to work from in its infor mation campaign when results of a consumer survey are made available in "November, said Mr Gauthier. Researchers employed by the foundation are asking Canadians across the country about their fabric-buying habits. "Retailers have abused the word 5 import, and consumers show un- just prejudice for it," believes Mr. Gauthier. "We want to teach Canadians to buy on value. It fol- < lows that more Canadian goods will automatically be sold." Recreational Assets By DON PEACOCK Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP)--They come to swim, fish, hike, go horseback riding or just to gaze at the scenic beauty. They come to the national parks for recreation, for their health, to escape the ten- sions and troubles of this modern age. Whatever their reason for en- joying these simple but ancient pleasures, Canadians have to thank for the opportunity an idea that bubbled from some hot springs discovered in the Rocky Mountains during the horse and buggy era, when the was unsplit. On one of those "good old days" in 1883, some workmen building the CPR through the Rockies west of Calgary found hot mineral wa- ter gurgling out of Sulphur Moun- tain. They staked a claim to the area for themselves With the same self-interest, so the story goes, a member of par- liament of the day the story doesn't identify him--bought the workmen's interest in the natural phenomena and prepared to ex- ploit it. RESERVED FOR PUBLIC But federal authorities heard of it and, perhaps motivated by the example set in the United States 11 years earlier, mived to set aside the area for the public's use, The purchaser was paid $1, M0 for the road he buiit to the springs and a small lodge nearby. Then, in 1887, parliament estab lished Rocky Mountains -- now Banff -- National Park. Canada's national parks system was born In its early days some commer- tial interests particularly min mg and lumbering - scoffed at the dea of setting aside valuable land atom still just for the public's pleasure. Un- til 1930, in fact, mining licences could be given by the federal ad- ministration for mine operations within the parks But into the National Parks Act of 1930 was written a section re- quiring that the parks be used so as to leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future genera- tions. A bastion against commer- cialism had been thrown up. Since Banff, the number of parks has grown to 17 covering a total of 29,000 square miles. They can be found in every province except Quebec znd Newfoundland. BIG AND LITTLE The newest is Fundy, estab- lished in 1947 on the New Bruns- wick bay of the same name. Wood Buffalo, straddling the Alberta- Northwest Territories border and covering 17,300 square miles, is the biggest. The smallest is Georgian Bay Islands Park in On tario, where a unique feature in its 5.4 square miles is a high, circular stone pillar rising unex- plained from flowerpot island. Some of the country's finest beaches can be found in Prince Edward Island National Park ex- tending 25 miles along the prov- ince's north shore. There are ex- cellent beaches, too, in Point Pe- lee,"'six square miles on the shore of Lake Erie in Ontario Riding Mountain .in Manitoba is possibly the most unexpected park ef them all. It covers 1148 square miles on the summit of the Manitoba escarpment, which rises suddenly out of the flat prai- ries to 2,200 feet above sea level Lush forest is dotted by lake and laced by streams in the 1,469 square miles of Prince Albert Park in Saskatchewan, and a cloistered beauty in eastern On- tario's St. Lawrence Islands Park enclosing 13 of the Thousand Is- Ph lands in that lazy-moving section of the river, The most inaccessible is Gla- cier Park in the superb Alpine region of British Columbia's Sel- kirk Mountains. Only the CPR rail line west of Banff serves it § now, but the Trans-Canada High: yay eventually is to pass through it. One of its most unusual features are the Nakimu Caves, about a mile in length. They were discov ered years ago by a German mountaineer named Deutchman, § but as yet they have not been widely visited by the public Glacier, Yoho and Mount Rev- elstoke par are administered from Field, C., in Yoho. The general elevation of 6,000 feet makes Mount Revelstoke the high est park in the country Largest of the heavily - patron ized parks is Jasper. Its 4.200 square miles adjoin Banff's 2.564 The two are Canada's best-known parks, the fame of their attrac- tions extending to many places abroad, The earliest ghosts of Canada history linger in the 390 - square mile confines of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It is § part of that island off the Nova Scotia mainland on which John § Cabot, who discovered the North American mainland in 1497, is be lieved to have first landed "To be sure, there is value to § Canada in the industries that de rive benefits from the parks," Re sources Minister Lesage told 'the last session of Parliament, "bu infinit2ly greater is the value ou people derive n happic minds and healthier bodies," tag merchandise with SSS and Floor Sample Furniture to go for 16.000. before 6 p.m. Mon.
