Odizva Girl Leaves Tomorrow On Long Journey Miss Audrey Hurlbert, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hurlbert, Oshawa Blvd., leaves Oshawa on Sunday enroute for New York where she will sail on the SS "Taurus" direct for Nigeria, British West Africa. Miss Hurlbert attended King Street School and the OCVI, later attending Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alberta, graduating in April of last year. In Nigeria she will be doing missionary work under the Sudan Interior Mission fer brother, Vernon, left Oshawa nearly two years ago for Nigeria, working with the same mission so brother and sister will soon be united in the land to which God has called them to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. A farewell service was held on Wednesday night in Gibbons Street Church, under the auspices of Calvary Baptist Church, where friends and members gathered to wish her God speed. I The Rev. and Mrs. H. K. Dancy, | representatives of the Sudan In-| terior Mission were present and) brought greetings. Mr. Dancy told of the need of workers and re- lated some of the exveriencs of many of the missionaries as they do medical work, teaching and preaching. He also impres od the listeners with their part in helping to. spread the Gospel by praying for Miss Hurlbert 1 The Calvary male quartet sang two songs, "I Want Mv Life to Tell for Jesus," and "God Plans the Best for Me" Representatives of the different departments of the church brought greetings, Mrs. A. R. Alloway represented the Senior Women's Cirele: Mr. Clifford] Trick, the Young People; Mr. Vie- tor Henkelman, the Sunday School and Mr. Walter Mills, the church. The Rev. Cecil Nelson, superin-| tendent of the Bible Class Move- ment also spoke and related how Miss Hurlbert had helped in that work and thanked God for her faithfulness. Many others also spoke assur- ing Miss Hurlbert of the prayers which would be offered for her. A love offering was taken and presented to her by the pastor, the Rev. C. M. Keen. Miss Hurlbert sang a solo, To W. Africa MISS AUDREY HURLBERT ewc,, to family life. At this ho I am purposel alone, headi for some cocktail bar to kill time over a drink and relax until din- ner and another night. At the "right" cocktail lounges there are always a dozen or more persons, you know the kind: well dressed, alert, sophisticated, "'suc- cessful." There will be a few couples, laughing and murmuring together, but mostly singles: men land women alone with a drink land a cigarette, avoiding each others' eyes, yet with a peculias feeling of kinship as they sit there, wary of the sort of pick-ups that happen so often in a big city. SILLY CODE I've wondered about it a lot-- wondered what is to be gained by a dictate of society that prevents {lonely persons from speaking to {each other in such circumstances. Is there a reasonable solution for us, without resorting to mar- riage brokers, or to phony "get- acquainted" clubs: or to "why not call up" this-or-that relative or fellow worker? F.B. WRONG DIRECTION Dear P.B.: You have a problem of emotional isolation, so let's not beat about the bush, talking in terms of masses of people. In your long letter, here condensed, you disclose (inadvertently) a kind of cult-worship of brisk "am- bition" and big "success," as if these wereinsignia of society's anointed, so to speak. Evidently you have a religious sort of respect for acquisitive drive and worldly "recognition," as aspects of human enterprise that (supposedly) lead into, and are part of, the "good life." And probably this outlook on the hu- man struggle is just about the apn total of your conscious phil- oSophy of existence. For the rest, ou don't know how to begin to ve as a psychologically matur- ing individual, in a "great wide wonderful beautiful world" (to borrow a poet's phrase). Seen in perspective, from the vantage point of a good deal of living, the big city cocktail loun- ges are like sideshows in a circus atmosphere. They are corridors of unreality--and socially healthy in- dividuals recognizc them as such during their visits of patronage. But lonely, socially rootless per- sons tend to regard these places as pessible fonts of helpful fellow- ship--when in fact there is as little chance of that, as of finding water in a desert mirage. It isn't a "silly code" that keeps strangers from saluting one an- other as prospective friends in cocktail lounges, bars, theatres and other such public places. Ra- 3 ther, it is seasoned savvy in the asphalt jungle, to keep your up amongst persons whose intentions and or character don't know. And this traditional specially in order, drinkin, the pai then you are peculiarly vulnerable to opportunistic skirmishes t might be morally (or mortally) dangerous.
