nost 14 THE DAILY TIMES - GAZETTE, Friday, June 8, 1956 ff | SPORTS MENU "Everything from Soup to Nuts" | by Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA "MOTORS" opened their 'home schedule" in the Inter-County baseball league here at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Sta- dium last night and the result was no doubt as disappointing to the | crowd as the attendance was to the club officials. The ball game itsel', won by London Majors 5-1, was actually better than it shows. Each team had eight hits, the two pitchers, Roy McKay and Cec Hall also each allowed four walks and the strikeouts were about the same. The difference was that London bunched their hits, in the same frames that Oshawa made their two errors, One was a fortwo runs, aided by an error and intentional walk, the s a three-hits-for-three-runs afiair, an error and a walk ying a big part. On the other hand, Oshawa twice had big s ready to bust wide open -- they had the bases loaded with nobody out -- on two different occasions, What happened ? Well, London Majors came up with a sparkling double-play in each case to out each threat, each with a sizzling defensive game two-h other ag wipe Looking over the box score, like a grandstand manager, we note that most of Oshawa's hitting was performed by the bottom half of the batting order and this was perhaps a factor In their lack of success on the attack, Both teams played sparkling games in the infield, Ted O'Connor and Roy Lefevre being to the fore for *'Motors" while Gord McMackon and Bill Wine- garden were top stars for the visitors. At the moment, there doesn'd seem too much wrong with the Oshawa ball club that a couple of good players couldn't remedy, but they'd have to be a good-hitting infielder, for the left side of the diamond, prefer- ably a right-handed hitter and one good pitcher, preferably a reliable left-hander, Tomorrow afternoon, the Oshawa Molors are in action again on their home diamond. St, Thomas Elgins visit the Motor City Saturday and we're hoping for a nice, sun- ny afternoon and a much bigger turnout of baseball fans. With high calibre baseball entertainment available at very moderate admission prices, it's actually astounding that the attendance is eq small. With over 50,000 population from which to draw, we y't seem to have a quarter as many red-hot baseball enthusi- \ around as we did back 20 years ago. \WSPORTERS Did It! There wasn't mech between the pitchers except Roy McKay's ability to prevent the homesters from' getting a safe hit when it would have done him the most harm. Both he and Cec Hall for Oshawa, went the full dis- tance, each allowed a total of eight hits and each gave cp four walks. Hall manned five batters and McKay whiffed six. DOUBLE-PLAYS KILL LOCALS Yondon's sparkling defensive play in the infield was the decid- ing factor, Manager Rollie Leveille opened the 5th inning with a two- bagger and then McKay faltered for the first time, issuing a walk to Ted O'Connor and Geo. Brabin singled, to load the bases with none out, But Cec Hall grounded to shortstop, for a double-play, as Leveille came across the plate with Oshawa's only run Leveille got his second hit to open the 7th, O'Connor also sin- gled but Brabin's sacrifice bunt ittempt was too '"'strong" and Leveille was forced at 3rd and this budding rally was nipped there In the 8th, Gary Copeland open- with a single, then McKay to choose ed home| werth and Roy Lefevre, to again load the bases but once more the Oshawa threat was rubbed out had Home Opener To Majors Ability to make use of their|issued walks to both Don Ding-| Creighton, Jenkins and Winegar- den dividing London's eight safe- ties while Brabin and Leveille two apiece for the home when Haig Lavery lined out to) club. 2nd baseman Gord McMackon, Defensively, the double-plays COF SOFTBALL Cleaners, Regents, Whitby, ' Oshawa COF All Winners Scugog Cleaners Thornton's Corners' Regents, Whitby COF Oshawa Forresters all four land | chalked up wins last night in their who stepped on his base after the were the best moves of the game cop oorhall League schedule. play, Dingwerth being his second as the top stars as the infielders vietim, MAJORS CAPITALIZE Double-plays by Oshawa, Roy Lefevre doing the big job in the simpson, 3» first inning and Leveille in the McMacken, 3 second, curbed London's early at- tack but in the fourth they clicked gen for two runs, Don Mayes was safe Jenkins, rf Dale Winegarden, ss ous Brabin's bobble, then Creighton singled and a wild pitch the runners. held Mayes at 3rd, advanced good throw ween deliberately to fill the bases, then Bill Winegarden clipped a soli single to right, scoring Mayes and Creighton.
