42 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Friday, April 13, 1956 * [Providence Reds Red Wing Rearguard Bob Goldham, DETROIT (CP)--Bob Goldham,| Detroit Red Wings' great defence- man who was regarded by big- league coaches as a second goal tender, has retired from the Na- tional Hockey League. x The 33-year-old rearguard an- nounced the move Wednesday af- ter 12 NHL seasons. : His departure: leaves Wings, eliminated from the Stanley Cup final series by Montreal Canadiens two days ago, with a gaping hole in their defensive corps. They will have to come up with an outstand- ing man if they expect a strong contending club next season. Goldham's announcement was not surprising. He said a few months ago he probably would re- tire at the end of the 1955-56 cam- paign, "It wasn't fun anymore and I didn't want to stay around on a pension basis," he said. '"Maybe| I could go another year and maybe I couldn't. But I don't want to be around when I can't give 100 per cent." OFFERED JOB When Goldham informed Detroit general manager Jack Adams of his decision, Jolly Jack offered him a coaching job with Hamilton Cubs of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A League "Jack made me a wonderful financial proposition," Goldham said. "But I'm tired and stiff and want to think things out for a Retires while. Toronto is my home and I want to do what is best for my family." Goldham is a salesman for a Toronto construction firm. He is toying with the idea of making a career of it. is Goldham indicated the decision on the coaching position hinged chiefly on "whether my other em- ployer wil! permit it." He added: "I like 'the idea of working with youngsters and the salary terms are generous." POISON TO FORWARDS Goldham, 34 next month, was one of the most popular men in the NHL. But he was poison to opposing forwards because of his uncanny knack of throwing himself in front of flying pucks directed at the Detroit nets. That's how he got the reputation of being a second goaltender, Bob wag with the Wings for six seasons, during which they won five straight NHL championships and three Stanley Cups, He started his career with Toronto Maple Leafs and later went to Chicago Black Hawks. In his 12 seasons he totalled only 30 goals and 156 as- sists in the regular seasons anc playoffs. But he wasn't paid to score. Goldham, a native of George- town, Ont., started his pro career with the Leafs in 1941. He went into the navy in 1942 and rejoined Leafs for the 1945-46 season. Providence, with Bower frustrat- ing the Barons throughout, won 4-2 Wednesday night to take a 340 lead in the best-of-seven champion: ship series. The fourth game is here Friday night. Bower made 39 stops, including at least a dozen which spoiled ex- cellent Baron scoring efforts. Three times Cleveland had face- offs near Bower's fort, but couldn't scorg on him, ; Providence led all the way. Ken Davies scored the only first period goal and the Reds went ahead 3-1 at the end of the second after Paul Larivee and Ray Ross counted for Providence and Joe Lund scored for Cleveland. Jimmy Farellie put Cleveland back in the game at 7:32 of the last frame, scoring on a sharp pass from Gordon Vejpraja. In the final minute Cleveland goalie Roy McMeekin was pulled and George Blair then tallied the final Prov- idence marker. Larivee later received an injured wrist which may keep him out, of the remaining playoffs, Providence already has Aldo Guidolin benched by a bad knee; and Cleveland was without two of its stars--centre Jack Gordon, downed by flu, and John McLellan, who has a head injury. Detroit Tigers Not For Sale ? DETROIT (AP)--Detroit Tigers, the lucrative baseball club cur- rently carrying a price tag esti- mated at $6,000,000 may not be sold after all, president Walter O (Spike) Briggs, Jr., said Wednes- wday "We're not going to sell to just anybody with a lot of money," said Briggs. "We want to justify our sale to the people of Detroit." Under a complicated trust set- up, the club theoretically would have to be sold. The Tigers were left in a trust when Walter O Briggs Sr., died and according to trust valuations, a baseball club usually is not considered a sound investment, Since the proposed sale was an- nounced, a dozen prospective buy- ers have been pounding on Briggs' door. The latest was the Detrnit Lions Football Co.,, which said Wednesday it would like to buy the American League club fran- chise and Briggs Stadium, sell shares in the franchise to fans and peddle the stadium to the city of Detroit, ; Stuck | for Money?
