Legion Presents Essay Prizes For some years Whitby Branch) 112 of the Canadian Legion has ed essay contests in the CELEBRATE SILVER WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moore, | iate family. Mr. and Mrs. Moore The Whitby Dunlops are in the Eastern Ontario Senior League | finals! At 10.00 p.m. Sunday night, Mr. Lorne Cook (1st. Vice-| President of the OHA, and convener of the Eastern League), call- ed yours truly to inform us that the Brockville Magedomas had conceded the series to the Whitby Dunlops. We had a call from Mr. "Del" McMullen, manager of the 'Maggies' earlier in the ing requesting Whitby's permission to throw in the sponge. Mr. Mec- even- | the Colborne Street School, prizes! oge . Mullen reported that he was aware that the Magedomas, were not will be presented to pupils of Six Killed supplying play-off ing. Satu off hoc ject th competition and there was little use in continu-| night's game here was a miserable display of play- and it was not the desire of the Whitby Dunlops to sub- fans to any further productions such as that, thus the Dunlops agreed to the forfeiture of the series. Actually, we are not looking down on the Brockville club at this turn of events. Let's face facts. The Magedomas, (as they | themselves were big emough to admit) were not a Senior Hoc- key club, in the latter weeks of the schedule. They made a play- off berth strictly because they had won a number of games early in the season, when they had a much different club, than | the one they had from mid-January on. Lack of altendance in | Brockville made it impossible to keep up the heavy payroll, and f along the trail most of their high priced stars quit the club. In all the Magedomas had a total of 29 players pass through their ranks this season, yet in the final game the club played, they had only 8 players on their regular club. Three other players in Saturday night's lineup were from the Brockville Hornets Jun- for team. 11 men in Brockville put more hours of hard work in to n (which was forced to concede even in the play-offs), than some p e put into the operation of many higher ranked clubs. Af 1 Stanford was forced to quit hockey (lollowing a nervous bre lown), "Del" McMullen toiled steadily trying to keep the team on the ice. Al. Kuntz, who has played a lot of hock- ey, both in pro and in amateur, deserves s lot of credit for staying on as playing-coach, with practically no remuneration. The Dun- can brothers, Don Thomson, Val Walker, Richardson, Baldwin, and Gibson are others, who stuck to the bitter end despite tremend- ous odds. From the Whitby Dunlop's side of the picture, the most sen- | sible solution was to accept the default by Brockville. Fans in | Whitby have supported the club well all season, and although Saturday night's crowd was down a little, there was still a preity good turnout. Nobody realized more than the Dunlop hockey club, that the fans were mot getting play-off hockey, yet we think everyone will agree that the local club has done their part in this series. The Dunlops are after the Oniario iiiie, and the club cannot see their way clear to do anything other than go out on that ice with but one objective, and that is to win. Some people may think that you should take it easy, when other teams are playing poorly. However, we feel that most hockey fans will agree, that because another team is not playing well, is no excuse for you to try and make them look good. That is merely trying to kid the public, and it certainly won't help your club, when you get into a tough series. All in all, little harm has been done. The Brockville-Whitby se- ries ld likely have gone only two more games, and certainly one could | y expect too much interest, after the scores of the first two games. It does mean that the Dunlops will have a fairly long wait before they meet the winners of the Cornwall-Kingston series, but the team will continue to practice regularly, and it is possible that there may be a top exhibition game here in Town .on Saturay night, if certain negotiations now underway, "materialize. As of this writing the Cornwall Colts and the Kingston Goodyears are tied at one game apiece, with the third game being played last night in Kingston. Goodyears won a close 65 decision in Kingston, while the Colts squeezed out an 8-6 win on Sunday afternoon in Cornwall. This should be a honey of a series before It's over, with the D 3 meeting the winner in a bang-up league final. So rest your s friends, and get ready for the next round. Intermediate "C" play-off hockey will be the attraction at the Whithy Arena on Wednesday night, when the Ajax Interme- diates play the Oro Combines starting at 8.30. Doug. Maundrell (who along with his brother Cliff, played a lot of hockey around here a few years back, is coaching the Ajax squad. The opposi- tion comes from a centre close to Barrie, and Ajax fans will likely be out in goodly numbers to cheer their team on in this series. The Ajax club were to have met Camp Borden a week or so ago, but the Army team failed to go through with the series. Gordie Deeth, Dave Kemp, Don Houle, Jack Smith, Nole Row- land, Danny Collins and Red Beamer, are a few of the Ajax stalwarts who will be in action here tomorrow night. The Town and Country . . .
