40 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Saturday, February 18, 1956 TIES GAZETTE. HOME OF THE WEEK i C------ HOME DESIGN No. 162 This distinctive home is enjoy- Ing amazing popularity. Modern styling is exemplified by such fea- tures as a variation in roof angles, a raised ceiling in the living room with a row of windows over the rear, roof section, which admits daylight from both sides of the room. It also permits continuous light cove for indirect lighting the length of the living room and hall. The large kitchen has entrance to a lovely terrace. Three large bed- rooms and a bath with lots of closet anc linen space, a work- bench and storage space in the garage, are but few of the out- standing features here. A base- mentless plan is also supplied. Standard Builders' Blueprints cost- ing $8.75 a set may be obtained for this design No. 162. For fur- ther information write to: The FIRST AID TO THE AILING HOUSE By ROGER C. WHITMAN IN THE HOME WORKSHOP EXHAUST FAN IN CHIMNEY QUESTION: We bought an old house and want to remodel kitchen which is on the second floor. There is a chimney in the corner, and we want to know if an exhaust fan placed in this chimney would be satisfactory. We have two hot water heaters-- gas fired -- that seem to be con- nected to this chimney. The 3is furnace is connected to another chimney. What do you advise? ANSWER: I am against the idea and I am sure the "city fathers" will also feel that way. Any in- creased movement of air in this chimney, when the fan would be operating, could cause the flame in the water heater to go out, re- sulting in trouble. DISCOLORED WOOD WINDOWS QUESTION: We have been building a house this past summer and the windows were installed and not varnished. The wood in the sash has yellowed, and we also discovered that moisture h as stained them dark: We were told to use some kind of acid to bleach out the discoloration. Do you have information on the use of it? ANSWER: Ozxalic acid (poison) which you can get at your paint store, is the chemical used. ke TERRACE 44:80 [053 DINING IM 88:93 f GARAGE 1s 1-0 / ( § LIVING &M 166118 LL 162. 1027 Saf. When the wood is dry, smooth it by rubbing with "000" sandpaper, wipe off the dust and finish as desired. MAKING GLASS OBSCURE QUESTION: What would you suggest to put on a clear bath- room window glass to let in light and still obstruct the view from ouside? ANSWER: The best procedure] is to go to your glass man and; pick out a nice pattern of obscure glass and either have him put it in or put it in yourself. Results would be most desirable. You can, however, do the following: Glass should be cleaned thoroughly and then wiped with alcohol or turpen- tine to remove all traces of grease. Cover the glass with a sheet of white tissue paper -- cut the|eirate through the thinned with one-fourth as much turpentine. The varnish will pen- and ad- to the glass, holding the paver in Dace The window could washed, after a week or so. PLASTIC TILE HARD TO CLEAN QUESTION: I have vinyl-asbes- tos tile on the kitchen floor. It gets badly scratched, probably by the children's leather shoes. It is impossible to remove the , ex. cept by using a cleanser and lots of elbow grease. Occasionally, the tile is polished with paste wax and about every two wi with a good liquid wax. Is cleanser harmful to the tile? I have been told by some not to wax this type of floor. Can you advise? ANSWER: Vinyl - asbestos tile does not come with a glossy fin- ish, therefore it is advisable to wax such a surface. You should be able to get better results by using one type of wax and my preference would be for a good quality self - polishing wax. It would also help to place a mat out- side the kitchen door so the young- sters could wipe off some of the grit and sand they pick up on the soles of their shoes, while playing outdoors. WATER SUPPLY FROM WELL QUESTION: We have a deep well and the water from it is soft and excellent for drinking and household purposes. The city is now coming through with "city water." The pipes are laid and 1 suppose I yill have to hook up to the system this spring. My prob- lem is: Can I keep my well and pump and, say, have one faucet in the basement so that we could use the well water for drinking purposes? Or can they condemn it so that I cannot use it at all? ANSWER: I do not know of any ordinance or regulation against here #l|you are now worryin si | assume you filled in the excava-| =F! [tion around the foundations with in the basement? I have eovered the sub-floor with a 5-pound roof- ing paper so that rain water will not get into the basement. What do you suggest that I do to Jravent the frost from heaving the footing? ANSWER: If you have the foot, it is large enough to support the structure, when finished, and the foundation walls are large enough, there is nothing else you can do. Whet_er or not your home is com- pleted, your basement is still sub- ject to the same weather condition about. I ||ing down below the frost line, | A. MORTGAGE LOANS AVAILABLE Ralph S.
