(CP) -- Evidence of threats to Russian nationals and intense pressure on them to return home has been revealed through the death of a refugee in New Zealand. Peter Platanow, 32, a shoe- faker, was found dead in his gas- filled flat in Christchurch. He was « lieutenant in the Red army who during the war deserted with an- other Russian officer, a major. Both came to New Zealand after the war as displaced persons. "Both men worked in different parts of the country and appeared to have settled down. But suddenly h asked to return to Russia. The major left and nothing has been heard of him since. But Platanow had second thoughts. A job was found for him in another part of the country under another name and he remained in hiding for several months. Then after working for some time in a shoe factory in Christchurch, he was found dead. | REVEALED AT INQUEST | The background of these events was revealed by a witness at the closely guarded secret. The wit- ness, also a Russian, said he had Suicide d Threat been friendly with Platanow while they were working at a railway camp " know that another Russian national was continually at Peter, requesting him to go back to Rus- sia and that this Russian went with him to the Soviet legation in Wellington," the witness said. After Peter had visited the lega- tion he appeared to be frightened, both of going back to Russia and of remaining in New Zeal The witness said Peter told him he must go back, as he had no future in New Zealand. Others told him not to be foolish. "Peter said to me: 'I am afraid to stay here. If I don't go back I cannot live in this country. They will get me.' "Peter told me that he had been told to go back to Russia and that if he did not go, Russia would get even with him. He said he had been told he could not hide him- self anywhere. They would find im "A few days later Peter left the camp, leaving all his belongings, radio and so on." The inquest has been adjounred, but his case bears a striking sim- ilarity to others which have occurred in New Zealand.
