The campaign against the Nor- way rat is being waged along a 24-mile-wide and 250-mile-long area that includes 40 townships on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border from a point south of Medicine Hat north to Lloydminster. Officials report that since Aug- ust, 1953 no. rat colonies have been found west of the 6,000-square mile region where extensive con- trol measures have been carried out. The first rat colony in Alberta was found on a farm in the Al- sask district four miles west of the Saskatchewan border and about 200 miles southeast of Ed- monton. It was quickly extermin- ated. In early 1951 the threat in- creased. Surveys showed that by the spring of 1952 there were 39 colonies on farms between Em- Alberta Rat Hunt Gains Momentum The Norway rat officially was declared a pest and ft became the legal responsibility of any person in the province to destroy rats on his premises. When the campaign was com- pleted in July, 1953, more than 4800 square miles in the danger zone had been "rat-proofed." Tests with warfarin proved so successful the government under- took the second phase of its cam- paign in the fall of 1953 by dis- tributing the poison, with instruc- tions for use to all farmers and 50, 250 and 750 kilowatt hours a month.
