SWAMP INTG GARDEN A new area that may duplicate the fabulous agricultural story of Holland Marsh, the market | garden near Lake Simcoe, Ont., is a swamp in East Gwillim- bury township, 40 miles from Toronto. Holland Marsh has been | responsible for market gardeners * making fortunes as they pro- duced high-quality vegetables in abundance. The new swamp, par- tially cleared by six farmers, | could be bought for $25 an acre | a year or so ago, but when ren- dered usable as garden land, | could command up to $1,000 an acre. W. E. 'Fiat Panis' Is UN Motto For Food Organization QUEBEC (CP)--The motto of the United Nations Food and Agricul- ture Organization is "fiat panis'-- "let there be bread." Its aim for all nations: Freedom from want. FAO, first of the UN's 10 spe- cialized agencies, was formed here Oct. 16, 1945, with 44 nations as members. There now are 71 mem- bers. Some of the founders of FAO gathered here today to mark the agency's 10th anniversary. Absent was External Affairs Minister Pearson, chairman of the interim ission which blished FAO during 1943-45. He was at Singa- pore for a conference of the| Colombo plan, aimed at raising living standards in South and South-| east Asia. But through the medium of a recorded talk, Mr. Pearson wished the gathering well and said that FAO's work has been of far-reach- ing importance in helping to free man from the fear of hunger. FAO's founding here was com- memorated with the unveiling of a bronze tablet at the Chateau Fron- tenac. FAO now is operating technical assistance programs in some 55 countries. Some 225 experts are in the field and more than 100 fellows in training, Canada has contributed more than $2,000,000 to FAO since 1945, not counting contributions to the | technical assistance program. Can- ada pays 3.26 per cent of FAO's regular budget.
