CLEVELAND MYERS Last year 3,000,000 persons took adult education in 6,000 schools throughout, the country. In New York state, fifteen times as many adults signed up for classes in 1953 as in 1945, In the ten states with the strongest program in adult ed- ucation, one out of twenty of their grownups were enrolled. These states provide some pub- lic funds for adult education, all other states did as well, a total of about 10,000,000 would be enroll ed for adult education courses in the United States The emphasis on adult educa- tion today stems from the increas- ing recognition that adults. must keep learning in a society that changes as rapidly as ours. New skills and knowledge are being gained in part - time programs which need not interfere with job demands or homemaking, WHAT DO THEY STUDY? The choice of courses pursued in adult education indicates a very wide range of interest--from baby sitting to marketing, jewelry mak- ing to airplane mechanics, business Ii courses was to improve profes- sional knowledge and skills. Next was the wish for cultural im- provement, Some desired to in- crease their circle of friends or to improve in social graces, Among other reasons given were: To get along better with people, to be more effective in civil af- fairs, to learn a sport or hobby, While a few adults who pursue part - time courses start from scratch to earn a degree, or finish a few courses to this end, most interest in their subject. Here a Bell technician is testing the telephone lines in your neighborhood. Carefully and quickly his hand brushes the circuits in the telephone building with an electronic "line patrol". He is hunting for weather-worn wires which may cause a noisy line or snap during a storm. Forewarned by this periodic testing we send a man to change the faulty line -- which could be the "drop line" running from your home to the main telephone cable. Because of this electric detective we can use expensive wire until its service life expires fully, without sacrificing material or manpower. And that helps us to keep your telephone costs down.
