| § THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Mondsy, May 15, 1956 Editorials Famised Te Doty Pies Winthy) 7 Bimese Stress South, Oshaws, Ontario, d by Timess Keen Contests Are Likely In Local Constituencies There is every indieation that the pro- yincial general election contests in Osh- awa and Ontario County Ridings will be keenly contested, In the new Oshawa rid- ing, carved out of the former South On- tario constituency, there are four candi dates in the field, On Ontario riding, now almost entirely rurs), except for that part of Whitby town lying north of High- way 401, there are two candidates in the field, In that riding, nothing has been heard as yet from the CCF party as to its intentions, With the election now only three weeks away, there will be keen electioneering in that time, The three major parties are re presented by excellent candidates in Osh. awa riding, with T. D. Thomas, CCF, William Lawson, Liberal and Hayden Mac- donald, Conservative, carrying the ban- ners for their respective parties, These men can be depended upon to enter into the election battle with energy and ag- gressiveness, The fourth candidate, wil. fred Duffield, representing the Labor- Progressive, formerly the 'Communist party, will also in all probability try to inject some new sparks into the eam-~ paign, sithough even he must acknowl edge that his is a hopeless cause, The two candidates nominated so far in the Ontario riding are both eitizens of Port' Perry and are highly-respected throughout the riding, Dr, M, B, Dymond, the Conservative candidate, and W, Tho- mas Harris, the Liberal nominee, have both been active in community affairs, and they are well-matched opponents, There is still a possibility that a CCF candidate may be nominated, but should the issue be left to a straight fight be. tween the two old parties, it will indeed be an interesting contest, The electors are being given every op- portunity to inform themselves of the merits of the various parties and their candidates, It is to be hoped that they will take advantage of these opportunities, so that they can vote with intelligence for the man of their choice, But above all, it is important that they do study the issues and that they vote, so that the results may be a true expression of the will of the people in these two ridings. Taxes On The Baby- Sitters Governmental authorities at all levels are continually on the watch for new | sources of revenue, Much of their time is | devoted to figuring what new kind of taxes can be Imposed to produce additional revenues, True, they have | fairly well taken advantage of every possible means of extracting money from | the hard-working taxpayers, Perhaps we should not mention this, but there is one tax now being imposed throughout the United States which has not yet caught | the eye of our governments over here, In the United States, there are now | taxes on baby-sitters, It might be more accurate to say there is a tax on what | they earn. In the United States, anyone {who employs a baby-sitter must file a social security return, and pay a two per gent tax on the wages paid to the baby- "sitter, More than that, one must withhold On The Growing Over in Whitby, some 86 of the men of the town are growing beards, This, how- ever, if only a temporary condition, 1t is a stunt arranged in connection with celebration of the town's centennial, Come July 2, the beards will disappear. But here is something that might con- tinue the vogue of the beard, Irvin Studer, member of Parliament for Swift Current ~=Maple Creek, advises all men to grow beards. By doing so, he contends, men will recapture their virility and masculinity, Women, he claims, are helpless in the arms of bearded men. If the clean-shaven mode continues, Mr, Studer foresees dire consequences, He envisions domination by women and the day when men "will be treated just the same as the male bees in a hive," Despite Mr, Studer's dire warnings, men will probably continue to confine beard growing to fishing trips which take them away from civilization and women, or to stunts like that now in progress in Whitby. Men are too apprehensive as to Other Editors' Views HARDLY AS MANY (Niagara Falls Review) More than sixteen million vehicles cross and re: cross bridges and ferries between Canada and the United States In the course of a year, and we wonder if as many as 1,000 vehicles pass in and out from behind the Iron Curtain, The Daily Times-Gazette Er rh or aT rg 5 5 3 : i over eo per outside earrter delivery Ri "AVERAGE NET PAID CIRCULATION FOR APRIL 12,533 il from' the baby-sitter two per cent of the money owing, and pay it to the govern- ment, so that the return actually reports a tax of .four per cent, Baby-sitters, it is not surprising to learn, do not like having two per cent deducted, Bo what is happening to keep the baby-sitters in a contented mood, is that employers themselves are paying the whole four per cent tax, There appears to be no escape from this tax, as the baby- sitter's social security card sooner or later comes before an official document and if back taxes are not recorded they are as- sessed against the employer, plus interest and heavy penalties, This baby-sitter tax has not shown up here--not yet, But let no one be too sanguine, Our tax boys in Ottawa may be counted upon to get on to it sooner or later, They don't miss many bets, Of Beards the result of an effort to grow facial folinge, A look at some of the Whitby contestants convinces us that a beard can look a sorry thing, Beards come in all shapes and sizes, There are thick beards and thin beards, scrawny beards and spots ty beards, and too often the results are not what was expected, Women, bless their hearts, may have something to say about attempts to bring back the habits of grandfather's time, After all, they are on the receiving end of men's embraces, and thelr enthusiasm for a beard may be far removed from what Mr, Studer anti- cipates, However, we have the advantage of having at our doorstep a group of 656 men who have voluntarily taken unto them. selves various degrees of facial adorn. ments, Perhaps from them we may learn, if they are willing to talk, exactly what is the feminine reaction to the beard, These Whitby gallants are in a splendid position to either corroborate or refute the contentions of Mr, Studer as to the effect of beards on their women-folk, Bit of Verse SONNET Am I my brother's keeper? I say ves, And spread my hand to share whatever lies Within its valley's 'weathered ugliness, His breath is part of me, his agonies Pacing like tigers in the mind's slow glare; I look through his dark eyes as he through mine; There is no flake of laughter we do not share, No grief, or nakedness, or glass of wine, 80 it shall always be: Inseparable, All men are born wearing the skin's bright clothes, And die together in love, in peace, or wars Thus has it been since mountains shuddered and rose, Briny with sea foam, and hot deserts fell In wind-whipped patterns under the watching stars, DANIEL WHITEHEAD HICKY Bible Thoughts This faith has made old age a glorious time of lite. Jy do is first to admire the uns n painted by the great touchables at the Orangerie, and then buy a copy for themselves at the Royal Gallery, It must be recalled that few of the original paintings ever fetoh: ed the prices now demanded, It is well «= known that many of the impressionist paintings were sold for a mere song Just enough to allow the artist to buy a meal, One of the most eutstanding canvases at the Orangerle Is the portrait of Napoleon In his study, David in 1012, The first time to he exhibit ed in Paris, so many were the visitors admiring this masterplece that 1 had difficulty in getting near enough to see the details, "Mou: lin Rouge" by Lautrec also drew the crowds, as did 'La Volture Aux Courses" by Degas, The most outstanding coples at the Royal Gallery were Pleasso's "Nature Morte a la Guitare," "La Clowness'! hy Lautree; Gauguin's "Mill in Brittany," "The Koyer of the Dance at the Opera," by the great expert of the ballet, Degas and Manet's "Bar of the Folles Bergeres,' It is difficult really to make a cholee among the old master: pleces, as in all paintings It 1s a matter of individual taste, The reproductions of the Spanish school, "The Infant Marguerite Therese! "The Drinkers' and as any 1 saw, while the 15th cen: fury Rottieelli's incomparable 'Birth of Venus" shows the marks of the painter's brush, Whatever this secret process might be, it is without a doubt a step forward in allowing art lovers with small means to possess plotures they wonld otherwise never have dreamed of owning, IN DAYS GONE BY 15 YEARS Prize winners for the "Opening Day' events at the Oshawa Golf Club were Mra, Angus Barton and her partner, Frank Evans; Mrs, Ed Armstrong and Jack Coleman and Mrs, Norman Irwin with her partner Alex C, Hall, Miss Rarbara Leask won a 8il ver medal and Master BI Leask won a bronze medal in the eloous tion section of the Durham Musie Festival, in Bowmanville, Amold Jobb and Lloyd Smith of the Oshawa Public: Schools teaching staff obtained thelr de grees of Bachelor of Arts from Queen's University, Kingston The Lyceum Club and Women's Art Association held an exhibition of paintings In the Genosha Ho tel, Local painters having pletures AGO in the exhibition Included Mrs A.
