Suggested title: 'With Douglas in the Deep South." You'll recall that Paul Douglas, who played Captain Queeg in the troupe, was reported to have pop- ped in Greensboro, N.C., that "'the South stinks." The casual remark to a Greens- boro Daily News reporter started a chain reaction. Producer Paul Gregory cancelled the play's tour, declaring Douglas' remark had so infuriated the South that business would be poor. Douglas denied he issued the quote and sued Gre- gory for $1,000,000. Actors Equity placed the actor on probation for a year because of his conduct on the tour. How did the hassle look to an innocent bystander? Corey, mild- mannered but plain-spoken, af- fords a view. SOME RESENTMENT "Naturally, the rest of the com- pany wasn't happy about his re- marks," said Corey. "But I'm not sure what effect they had on busi- ness. There was a little resentment in Greensboro before we left. But we went on to good business in laces like Atlanta, Jackson and irmingham--and you can't get much deeper south than that." Corey explained that the com- | pany had swung up to Pittsburgh | when the cancellation came from Gregory. Other southern dates re- mained to be played. Then the | producer was threatened with law | suits by civic groups and others who were sponsoring the cancelled | dates. He whipped up a company [headed by William Bendix to ful- | fil the obligations | "They asked me if I would go |along,"" Corey said. "I said I'd do {it for $3,000 a performance." | The actor indicated he had enough sailing aboard the Caine From last July to February, he toured in the U.S. and Canada | While he found it a worthwhile experience, he doesn't plan to re- peat it soon. But he said the tour proved the healthy condition of the road for legitimate plays. He added: "You can't tell about some places. In one town of 2,300 in Wisconsin, we drew 4,000 people. In Toronto we couldn't draw flies. Yet Montreal gave us big crowds. We played Detroit for a run that we thought | exhausted the possibilities. But we came back three months later and played a nearby university field house with 9,000 people." | | HARMLESS SNAKE The black snake which grows up |to six feet in parts of North and South America is non-poisonous.
