Moving to the island with their baby, two dogs, three cats, two goats, two pigs and a Rhesus mon- key, the Withycombes found that the isolation brought hazards. In 1949 Mrs. Anne Withycombe slip- ped while walking over the rocky island which rises in a pinnacle to 268 feet and her baby, a boy, as born prematurely. The radio- telephone, the only link with Guer- nsey, three miles away, was out of commission, and Withycombe had to use smoke signals to sum mon help. The baby survived. Last November Withycombe fell over a cliff and suffered a deep head wound. The radio swas out of operation again. Mrs. Withy- combe lit fires and rang some bells to give the alarm. No one neard her, however it was two days later when a boat called, carrying supplies. Withycombe underwent a brain operation in London hospital. His wife quit Jethou, taking all the animals except the monkey, which refused to come along and was finally shot. Pierre Jailhouse Acquired Mural' But Lost Visitor PIERRE, 8.D.--Police Chief Mor- rish Michaelson tells this story of how a picture of Christ at Gethse- mane came to be painted on the Jailhouse wall. Jack Rencounter, 24, as sen tenced to serve 15 days for being drunk. Michaelson went into the cell block shortly after the man was arrested and noticed Red counter was sketching pictures of horses on the sides of a paste board box. "He seemed like a pretty good artist," Michaelson said, 'so I asked him if he wouldn't like to paint a picture to decorate the ail." Rencounter consented. The chief furnished paint brushes and a picture of Christ praying at Geth- semane. Rencounter applied a priming coat to the plaster wall and started copying 'the picture, "As he got along with his work," Michaelson said, "I could tell he was doing a pretty good job. So I told him that when he was done with the painting I would let him out of jail, "He finished in seven hours, which was a little faster than 1 thought he would, But it was a beautiful picture, and I let him go "You really have to see it to appreciate how good it is. We have had quite a number of people come into the jail to look at it." The spectators included a Suz- day school class.
