The Chinese invented the art of making pottery about 3000 B.C. | and almost 200 years before Christ, they discovered the art of | making porcelain. Both arts have served civilization ever since. The simple, primitive designs, painted in exquisite colors by these early day artists on pottery and porcelain alike, have served as models for the art of succeed- ing ages. INFLUENCE OVER ARTISTS These brilliant colors directly influenced artists of our own times -- the impressionists, the fauves, the cubists, the expres- sionists. Japanese color prints in- fluenced such 19th century art- ists as Manet, Monet, Degas, Tou- louse-Lautrec, Whistler, Renoir, Gaugin, Van Gogh and Matisse. One of the best-known of the traditional designers of the 18th century, Chippendale, was influ- enced in the character of his fur- Western World Borrows From Far East Countries when young couples got married, moved into their own homes and lived happily ever after. But with housing the way it is these days, they get married and move in with mother and dad, with the re- becomes a little hollow. A solution to the problem of housing for newly-weds in Cana- da's overcrowded cities is not an easy one. But many young coupl- es, have solved it by moving in with mother and dad, yet still having all the comfort and priv- acy of their own home. It works this way. Very often a marriage in the family leaves the parents with a fairly large home on their hands, and only them- selves to accommodate, By *'pool- ing resources" not only of fin- ances, but of combined skills, father and son (or father-in-law and son-in-law) have been able to convert the old family home into a convenient duplex, providing living acocmmodation for the new family, at the same time leaving ample quarters for the old folk. SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT In the normal two-storey house, bathroom on the ground floor and a kitchen upstairs and most of the job of making the house a two- family unit is done. In some cases, where the house is to be occupied by two families that are related, it is not even essential that the two units be self-contained. There are, however, a few fac- tors that should be borne in mind if the eshversion is to work out successfully. First, the location of the kitchen on the upper floor should, if possible, be directly above the main kitchen of the house. The installation is so much easier, because the water supply pipes, drainage, electricity and gas facilities can be extended di- Moving In With Parents Can Be Made Comfortable Love may have laughed at lock- rectly up to take care of the upper smiths in those good old days! kitchen. sult that the laughter sometimes' it is only necessary to provide a| Size of the upper kitchen will, of course, depend to a great extent on the layout of the upper floor, and which room is chosen to convert. But a very small room, or even a large cupboard, may be suffic- ient for the purpose. Kitchenette units specially designed to fit into small places can be bought for this type of installation. For in- stance, a combined unit measuring little more than 3 ft. long by 2 ft. deep will house sink, draining board, drawers and cupboards. A unit this size will even house a double sink with draining board to fit over one sink. SOLVING SPACE PROBLEM Conversely, the location of the bathroom on the ground floor should be as near as possible di- rectly below the main bathroom, Indians Base Claim On Old Rights ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)--The St. Regis Indian Fiiday virally laid claim to the $300,000,000 St. Law- rence power project. Counsel for three St. Regis chiefs filed in the New York state court of claims a $33,800,000 suit against New York in which they contended that title to Barnhart island in the St. Lawrence river actually rests with the St. Regis tribe of the Mohawks. The island, in American waters near Massena, is the site of the principal works of the St. Law-- rence Jove project, being built joinly by New York and Ontario. The Indians, in the court action, said their claim was based on "immemorial rights arising prior to white occupation." The suit was filed for Norman Tarbell, Hubert Garrow and Andrew Bero. ° for the same r of y and ease of installation. Here again, if space is a problem, spe- cially designed fixtures will often provide a solution. A very conven- ient three-piece bathroom can be built into a space no bigger than! 5 ft. by 5 ft. Even a large cup-| board or pantry can sometimes i be converted into a quite service- able and convenient bathroom. Here too, as in the kitchen above, specially designed fixtures | may provide solutions to the space | problem. Wash-basins no bigger | than 14" by 14", or sometimes one designed to fit into a corner, may make it possible to use a space | otherwise too small. The newly de- signed square bathtub can prove useful too, fitting into an area no more than 42" x 31" yet providing a full-length tub diagonally. In any conversion of this sort it is always wise to do your plan- ning with a reliable plumbing | contractor looking, as it were, | over your shoulder, because in this, as in most things, experi- | ence will help to avoid mistakes | and save money in the long run. Whip Atom niture by designs on porcelains and objets d'art brought from China by sea captains and mer- chants. The delicate Chinese and Japa- nese lacquer work influenced French furniture of the Louis XVI period. Cabinets and tables of this period ornamentation from the east--in fact, such decoration was called "Chinoiserie" by the French. IN ENGLAND, TOO In England, the famous Brigh- ton Pavilion, built in 1820, tured Chinese decor in wallpaper, furniture, lanterns and pagoda and fretwork details. Even the 'newest" trends in architecture stem from ent. Built-in, functional designs are Japanese in origin, as arg slid- ing doors, large window walls and asymetrical arrangements popu- lar in today's home. The simple, clean lines of furni- ture influenced by the orient make it adaptable for today's homes, whether period or modern. This adaptability permits the ad- dition of highlight accessories of oriental origin or influences in homes that well might otherwise be "pure period" or "pure mod- ern"--and purely monotonous.
